I think "inmates" was the standard term used . Kind of Politically incorrect nowdays. My grandmother is listed as an "inmate" of an orphanage when she was 10 in the 1910 census. How sad is that? JUDY
My mother's family was too at Gracedale, the Northampton County poor house, near Nazareth.
