Rootsweb does not accept attachments in its maillists, so if you get a message from the maillist (you can usually tell because the TO: line will be NJWARREN-L, PALOOKUP-L, etc)and this message has an attachment it is probably a virus and did not come through the Rootsweb server. If the message came directly from someone on the list to you, please be suspect. If you do not want to get antivirus software, be sure to backe up your hard drive often because a virus will make you lose everything.
