Rachel "Ray" WESTERVELT, born 1866, attended Centenary College from about 1879 to 1884. Since the college burned in 1899 there is no record of her having attended. In the 1880 census she is listed with her parents in Union County with the notation "at school". I could not find Centenary College listed in the 1880 census but on Jefferson Street I did find two homes that had several school age boarders (census taken June 1, pages 385B and 386. I cannot find Ray there. I do believe Centenary had living quarters - I have a notation (can't remember where I found it) "Opening date was 9/9/1884, tuition and board for 36 weeks was $275. (exclusive of extras)". In a book that has a chapter on Centenary, I found a picture of "Diokosophian Society Hall, 1895". Can anyone explain this society? Floreda Varick
