    3. I suspect it's possible that my gg grandfather, Abraham LAKE, lived in an almshouse or poorhouse at some point during his upbringing. He was born in 1796 in Hunterdon Co, probably in the vicinity of present day Hampton. Does anyone know of a poorhouse or an almshouse which would have existed in that vicinity during that time period? Are there pertinent records that exist? -- Marshall Lake -- mlake@mlake.net -- http://mlake.net

    1. My LANTZ - LANCE people
    2. I've been at this so long I've come down with "Sometimer's" - some times I remember to whom I've written and sometimes I don't. SO; HANS PETER LANTZ also known as JOHN PETER LANTZ, his son: John PAUL LANTZ father of ANTHONY LANTZ husband of MARY Unknown, his son JOHN LANCE ( LANTZ ) husband of Nancy Unknown and his son WILLIAM and William's wife CHARLOTTE BROWN JOHN PAUL LANTZ who was born April 10, 1733 in Winsberg or Windsberg or Windsperg in what is now Germany. John Paul came to America with his father HANS PETER LANTZ, born 1706 in or near Winsberg and married to Anna Maria Wick in 1726 was also known as John Peter LANTZ) in 1738. We have at lest some of the children of HANS PETER L:ANTZ, but know little more much about what happened to HANS PETER, husband of ANNA MARIA WICK, after he arrived in 1738. other then the reports of his death and burial in 1789 in Carnarvon Township, Lancaster Co. PA.Confirmation of his date of death and place of burial would be a significant find We know John Paul married ANNA MARGARET Unknown about 1749 and that he may have passed in 1771. To my knowledge John Paul's date of death has never been confrimed and there appears some confusion if the 1771 date of death was his or another family member As in his father, confirmation of his date of death and place of burial would be a significant find. We do know that John Paul LANTZ had at least five sons and one daughter and that it is said he is buried in Lebanon Township, Warren County NJ. One of these sons was ANTHONY LANTZ husband of MARY Unknown. Anthony and Mary have only two children of records, though surely there must be more. My buest guess is that Anthony was born between 1750 and 1759 and he died between 1835 and 1838. Ths one son I know of, JOHN LANCE was born in or near WALNUT VALLY October 07, 1780 so the family was living in Walnut Valley as early as 1780 and likely earlier. I think Antyony's wife, MARY Unknown, was born about 1755 but it's only a guess. Finding more about ANTHONY, husband of MARY would be unlock a major road black . I'm looking for an as exact date of death as possible, any other children then the two boys I know of, and what happened to MARY. Where could they be buried? Anthony's first son, or I think his first son was JOHN LANCE, though there was a JACOB LANTZ or LANCE but so far I've only found circumstancial evidence on the JACOB LANTZ - LANCE men to place as Anthony's son. John married NANCY who was born about 1793, died in 1851, and the couple raised at least four girls and four boys. John was a good businessman and a properous farmer in Walnut Valley and nearby Blairstown and when he died in Dec of 1856 he left a good estate to his children. JOHN LANCE is buried in Hainsburg Cemetery where is his marker lists him as "A Soldier of the War of 1812". Nancy may be there too but so far I've not found her. I think WILLIAM LANCE may have been John's eldest son but so far I've not found absolute proof of this nor that the WILLIAM LANCE which I believe born about 1817 and who married Charlotte BROWN is the same WILLIAM as the son of JOHN and NANCY. Still there seems little doubt as I have found no other record of any other WILLIIAM in or near BLAIRSTOWN. I've pretty much tacked down that WILLIAM LANCE, born about 1817 son of JOHN LANCE also probably seen as LANTZ earlier in his lifetime, is my WILLIAM LANCE who was the husband of CHARLOTE BROWN. Charlotte was born in 1835, daughter of Isaac V. Brown and his wife Ann. My best guess is that Charlotte, sometimes seen as Sharlot, married William close to the date of the first born child I know of which was March 1852. Doing the math we find that Charlotte was married young and that William was no child at the time. William was left some property after his father's death in 1856 but it looks like things did not go well for him. He attempted to make a living as a basket maker and as a shoemaker, but Charlotte died young sometime between the birth of the last (6th) child I know of in 1866 and the Federal Census of 1870 where William is listed as a "widower". I don't know what happened to Charlotte, her exact dod, place of burial nior what happened to William after 1870. I do know Williams' first grandson was born October 1874 in Scranton but so far I've not been able to trace William further. Any assiastance would be very much appreciated. Thank you. 3. Hello, I have found most of my VanKirk & Decker family, but am still missing some inf. Alexander Decker died June 10, 1870 in Knowlton, Waren Co., NJ and is buried in Fairview cem. He married Keziah Adams on May 1, 1811 in Sussex. I am looking for his parents, would they be listed on a Warren County death record? I believe they may be Cornelius Decker & Geertje Brink, but have no proof, but if death records recorded this inf. in 1870, I may. Sincerely, Marilyn in CA

    2. As a personal friend to Bob and Gretchen, I have the majority of Bob's genealogy. I, too, am a genealogist who has all my family from Northampton Co., PA and am indirectly related to Bob thru the Spangenbergs. I have been personal friends of Bob and Gretchen since 1960. In fact, Gretchen is coming this Saturday for a week to visit me here in Maryland. Her nephew gets married on Saturday in Alexandria, VA. Any help I can be to anyone who wrote Bob and needs help, I will be more than glad to respond to. I am sure Gretchen won't mind my sharing Bob's genealogy data. If I can update any data on his family or Gretchen's (VanKirk) would be appreciated by Gretchen and her brother on the Auble's and VanKirks. 3. Hello all Warren County researchers, Oh, how I have missed Bob Riddle & wish I could share with him that the VanKirk family has been connected and descendants from all 3 sons located and father/parents of James VanKirk born 1780-died 1833 & buried in Presbyterian Churchyard of Knowlton, have been discovered, his father is James VanKirk who married Jane House/Hansse per both John J. & David VanKirk descendants. Maude Auble, daughter of Sara Rachael VanKirk & George Auble, had believed that James' parents were John VanKirk & Anne Gordon (possibly they are the Uncle & Aunt & this John is brother to James who married Jane House, but I have not confirmed this) and this is where Bob & I had ended our research. Bob's wife descended from David VanKirk & Hester Cowell and I have found this history & just recently made connection to a family of John J. VanKirk & Keturah Titus through their son John Jim VanKirk & his wife, Mary Catherine Ramsey's descendants. David & John J. VanKirk's descendants have the history which lists, James VK & Mary Jones of Warren County, NJ, then James VK & Jane House, then John VK & Cornelia VanBrackle, then Jan Jansz "John" VerKerk, then Jan Jaszen VerKerck, then Jan Jelisz, Jelis Jansz and lastly Jan Thonisz VerKerck. Children of James VanKirk born 1780-1833 & Mary Jones born 1781-d.1858 & buried in Fairview Cem., Knowlton per 1856 Will of Mary (Jones) VanKirk are: The 3 sons are: John J. VanKirk married Keturah Titus. David VanKirk married Hester Cowell. James Burns VanKirk married Sarah "Sally" Ann Decker Beach. My line. Their 3 daughters are: Jane VanKirk married Lemar Summers. Mary VanKirk married Thomas West (and Daniel Miller is spouse listed in 1856 Will). Elizabeth VanKirk who married Abram/Abraham Rymond. Hoping someday to hear from descendants of the 3 daughters. Thank you to this board, Jan Raub Reuther & her wonderful site of Warren County history, Louis Creveling who has shared the history of Snells book, Roz Bellis (Bellis family) and to all the others who have shared their knowledge of this family line. I still have holes, i.e. who are the parents of Alexander Decker who married Keziah Adams, who are the parents of Mary Jones? It is so sad that the 1800 Census & 1810 are not available to view, but one day someone may know the answer and share. Hoping someday to visit Warren County. Sincerely, Marilyn LeVeque in CA

    2. Joan M Lowry
    3. Hello Everyone, BooksNJ (The Capital Bookstore) in Trenton would like you all to know about a book signing event coming up at the bookstore. I'm sure they'd be happy to see you there! The information follows: --------- On Thursday, October 13th, BooksNJ will host a signing event for the recently published compilation New Jersey in the American Revolution (Rivergate Press, 2005). Editor Barbara Mitnick and contributors Richard Hunter, Mark Lender and Thomas Fleming will be available in the store to sign copies from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. BooksNJ is located at 225 West State Street, first floor. Come early while supplies of this beautiful, hard-cover publication last. If you have any questions about the event or would like to order a signed book and have it shipped to you, please call (609) 943-4444. New Jersey in the American Revolution is $29.95 plus tax (and shipping and handling if mailed). Below is a synopsis of the book taken from the book jacket. Hope to see you on October 13th! "Barbara J. Mitnick has edited a remarkably comprehensive anthology, bringing new life to the rich and turbulent late eighteenth-century period in New Jersey. Originally conceived as a legacy of the state's 225th Anniversary of the Revolution Celebration Commission and sponsored by the Washington Association of New Jersey, the volume brings together contributions by twelve outstanding and recognized experts on New Jersey history. Chapters explore topics including New Jersey as the "Crossroads of the Revolution," important military campaigns, the 1776 Constitution, and the significant contribution of blacks, Native Americans, and women. Reflecting the contemporary view that the war's impact extended beyond military engagements, original essays also discuss the fine and decorative arts, literature, architecture, archaeology, and social and economic conditions. The reader is presented with a picture of life in New Jersey both separate from as well as connected to the fight for American independence and the establishment of the nation. Fresh and significant observations, including the fact that soldiers fought 238 battles on New Jersey soil (more than any other state) and that the social and political changes resulting from the war were more revolutionary than evolutionary make this accessibly written, beautifully illustrated volume appeal to the lay reader as well as scholars of New Jersey and Revolutionary War history. Barbara J. Mitnick, editor of New Jersey in the American Revolution, received her Ph.D. in American painting, sculpture and architectural history from Rutgers University. She is an art historian and adjunct professor of American history painting at Drew University in Madison, New Jersey. Her exhibitions include Picturing History: American Painting 1770-1930, and George Washington: American Symbol, for which she served as general editor of the accompanying publication. Contributors Ian C. G. Burrow Delight W. Dodyk Thomas Fleming David J. Fowler Harriette C. Hawkins Richard W. Hunter Mark Edward Lender Maxine N. Lurie Barbara J. Mitnick Merrill Maguire Skaggs Lorraine E. Williams Giles R. Wright" ----------- It sounds like there might be something for everyone in this book! Regards, Joan Joan M. 1. Additions
    2. Hi, folks... I've added a few more primary source documents to my web site. Jacquie Horanburg has shared one page of the 1850 census for Blairstown, which includes Gershom Linaberry and others, and I've added a number of marriages from Blairstown, Knowlton, Hope, Frelinghuysen and Hardwick which I got on my last trip to the Archives. You can see these by going to http://raub-and-more.com/docs/docindex.html and scrolling down to the bottom of the page. Incidentally, I do not mean to focus exclusively on northern Warren County...it is simply that my ancestors were from that area, so that's where I concentrate my own research. If anyone has records from other towns which they'd like to share, I'll be happy to publish them on my web site, giving credit to the submitter. Jan Reuther http://www.RAUB-and-More.com
