    1. Stephen and Elizxabeth (BUNN) DEAN in Greenwich Township before 1850-1860
    2. Richard Welch
    3. I am still searching for anything about Stephen DEAN (born 1775 in NJ - died before 1860 probably in Warren County) and his wife, Elizabeth (BUNN) DEAN (born ca. 1775 in NJ - probably died in Warren County, but year unknown) who lived in Greenwich Township, Warren County, when the 1850 census was taken. Stephen was listed as a carpenter in the census. They probably had at least six children: Barzilla (?); Christiana, b. 1802, moved to Ohio and married Asa BRAYTON; Catherine, born 1803, married Silas WALTERS in lived at New Germantown, Hunterdon County; Mary, born 1804, married David M. Welch of New Germantown, Hunterdon County and moved to Ohio about 1825; John and Stephen, Jr. There might have been a daughter named Rebecca, but I haven't found any proof. Elizabeth (BUNN) DEAN could also be the Jane Dean, aged 84 and born in New Jersey, in the home of Jacob (aged 47) and Rebecca (aged 43) Shultz in Greenwich Township (P.O. Philipsburg) in the 1860 Federal census. Jane might have been Elizabeth’s middle name. Nieces Mary WELCH and Christiana BRAYTON and nephews Stephen and John DEAN are mentioned in the will of their Uncle Anthony Bunn in 1866. In Theordore F. Chambers' history of the SUTTON and BUNN families, he refers to Catherine Walters’ father and Elizabeth Bunn’s husband as “Stephen Deen,” but no other information is given. My great-grandfather, Jacob WELCH, mentions in his diary a visit to his uncle Silas WALTERS' home while he was traveling home from serving in the Union Army in South Carolina. Can anyone tell me when Stephen and Elizabeth died and where they are buried? I also need information about their parents and ancestry. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! 3. Dear Marilyn, Thank you for your offer (below). I continue to search for my maternal ancestors, most specifically Harmon Shipman and his line. Alternate spellings include SCHUPPMANN, SHUBMANThus far I have the following in my notes: Herman Schuppmann made his initial appearance on the Hunter Lists (New York Palatine Subsistence Lists of Governor Robert Hunter) on 1 July 1710 with 6 persons over 10 years of age and 2 persons under 10 years of age. Based on the indicated ages of the children it is possible that one of the male children could have been the father of Harmon Shipman. In "The Palatine Families of New York" by Henry Z. Jones, Jr., 1985, pages 941-943, the author lists probable issue to include: Nicholaus, Catharina, Friederich and Jacob. He also states that Harmon Shipman could have been a part of this family. Considering the subsequent repeat of such names as Nicholaus and Jacob in Harmon's children, it must be considered that Herman Schupman could have been the father or an uncle of our Harmon Shipman. In "The Early Germans of New Jersey", T. F. Chambers, page 493, listed under Shipman: "Jacob Shubman (Shipman), on Society Lands, 1735, signed with Matthias, the subscription for a barn, 1751; married Mareiket (Mary Catherine); had Mareitje, b 14 Jan 1734, and prob. also Harmon; prob of German descent and no relation to Matthias." Based on the foregoing, this Jacob Shubman would have been born about 1719. It is more probable that he was a brother of Harmon Shipman. 3. Hi All - just a really quick plug for GSNJ... Most of the back issues are available for sale directly from GSNJ. So, if there are specific issues that you want - you can write to the society at GMNJ Back Issues, PO Box 1476, Trenton NJ 08607. They'll let you know if the issues are available and give you the price, etc. (See the website for more information on GSNJ and our collections: <www.gsnj.org>) I hope that isn't too commercial a post and if so, I really apologize! 3. I am trying to find some information on the Shanley family who lived in Oxford, Warren County in the late 1800s. They were Irish immigrants. John Shanley worked in a blast furnace according to the 1880 New Jersey census but in the 1887 Warren County Directory he is listed as a saloon owner. He died in Allegheny County, PA in 1889 but is buried in Warren County. His wife was Catherine Regan Shanley. How would I find out if he left a will, where he might be buried, any information on his business? This family has been a brick wall for a long time now and I am looking for anything that might help me trace their history. Thanks, Shaun

    3. Bob- Where do you live? Hopefully near a library from which you can get the Gen. Mag. of NJ? The Grandin Fulling Mill Book, 1774-1785, records begin with Vol. 52, no.1, Jan. 1977, and carry through over the next several issues. The original record book is in the collection of the Hunt. Co. H.S. The location of the mill was "just below what is now Hamden, in Clinton Township." The book contains "both the accounts and the job orders of the mill's customers but only the latter section is abstacted here for its genealogical details." The Janeway account books are a similar set of records for a store that was located somewhat further west, on the south branch of the Raritan, I believe, but for a period a generation earlier, for between ca 1734-1742 approximately. These were also published over several issues of the Gen Mag of NJ. I'm sorry I'm fuzzy on the Janeway details, but I'm in the process of reorganizing my bedroom and the copies are in there somewhere. The index to the Gen Mag should give you a citation. Both are excellent sources for locating a person in a place and time in colonial NJ. 3. Michelle, What kind of information do they have to share from the "History of Freemasonry in New Jersey"? All of my grandfathers and Great grandfathers were masons. They have the insignia on their tombstones. I don't know what that means, if anything though. We have been stumped with a 4th Great Grandfather and his sons were masons I believe. Would there be any info in there that may help us locate him? 3. Laurence, In response to your inquiry and as promised, here is the info from "History of Freemasonry in New Jersey, 1787-1987" compiled by R.W. Edward Y. Smith, Jr., Grand Historian.
