This should answer some questions about the poorhouse lady http://www.poorhousestory.com/poorhouses_in_new_jersey.htm
Here's another posting about Warren Co almshouses sent directly to me. I am not the person inquring initially, so suggest any further discussion be posted to the board. Does anyone on this board know whether what was called the MANSFIELD POORHOUSE is what is being described, below? This, below, sounds like Warren Haven which was in Oxford, but I don't think the two were the same or in the same location. Anybody? ----- Original Message ----- From: MARYALIBOCKM@cs.com To: msouders@nyc.rr.com Sent: Friday, September 01, 2006 11:48 AM Subject: Re: [NJWARREN] Warren County Almhouse Records 1908 In March 1830, the Warren Co. Freeholders purchased 390 acres including a house, barn and other outbuildings, and the county poor farm was instituted to house the indigent of the county. This included families with children, single men and women and the elderly. They were given food, clothing and a place to sleep and expected to work for their keep. The farm provided most living essentials and some able bodied persons were bound out to farmers or families who reimbused the county for work performed. To my knowledge this was the only such facility in the county. A modern building was built in 1952 and the name changed to Warren Haven. This is probably when the rules for admission were also changed. Today personal assets and Social Secuity allotments defray the cost of residency. By 1970 the facility had been transformed into a skilled nursing home for the county elderly and maintains an excellent reputation. Hope this answers some questions. MaryAlice
About five years ago, I sent this record to a web site called the Poorhouse Lady. The webmaster added my email address and said I would discuss the topic further, which wasn't accurate because I'd sent all that I knew and really wasn't interested in discussing further. To make matters worse, the site seems to have not been updated for several years and I can't get that sentence or my email address removed. In the mean time, here's what I sent to her. I'm sure there are people on the list who will know more. "On the subject of poorhouses in Warren County, it should be noted that the records for the Mansfield Poor House are kept at the Warren County Historical Society, in file drawers in an attic area. They're not in any particular order, so a researcher should have a date range in mind before searching them and might also want to make an appointment beforehand as searching may take longer than the scheduled two hours when the library is open to the public. I searched records covering 1875-1878 but don't know the full extent of the records they have. I don't know if Warren County had more than this one poorhouse during those years. Later, I believe, Warren Haven in Oxford was where indigents were supported...someone can confirm this, I'm sure. I was led to the poorhouse records originally by requesting a death certificate from Trenton. They sent me a photocopy of a whole page of deaths recorded at the poor house." Questions for other people on the list would be, When did Warren Haven in Oxford begin? Were there more than one poorhouse at any one time? Finally, you should be aware that the records will give you little information even if you can find them. In my case, what I found was the name of the person, when he entered, where he came from and when he died. What I wanted to know was, why he was taken there in the first place since he had a wife and family with assets who survived him. In other poor house records, I get the feeling that they were used as, maybe, nursing homes would be used today. If you look at census records for poor houses, there are often very, very old people living there, as well as widows and orphans. Those were the days before Social Security when there weren't many options when a person fell sick or destitute. Hi everyone, I recently found out that an ancestor of mine, John Armbruster, died in the Warren County Almshouse on 16 October 1908. His family lived in Phillipsburg. I was wondering if anyone was familiar with the Almshouse records that exist from 1908 and could suggest where and how I might access them. Thanks so much! ~Michael Messinger~

I apologize for sending this again but there is a correction. The date given was incorrect, the event is on Saturday October 14th. >You wrote: Hope I am not too late. Would you look for William Angle / >Engle and son Philip Angle / Engle? > William is the s/o Jacob Engle of Germany. This is my direct line. These names were sent to the NJWarren board yesterday. Look, people, I volunteer to do these lookups because I care about sharing information. Not because I want to be a saint, but because I'm a research librarian. But some of you need to do your part too. This is not the first request I've had for a name I've previously posted --- which means that some of you are not even checking what's been done in the past two days. Some of you haven't paid attention to the dates that the two resources cover (and ask me for 19th century names). Some of you give me only one spelling. If you're only searching under one spelling, then you re missing a lot of other records and no wonder you have brick walls. Some of you will come back in a couple of years and be amazed at what you overlooked. I know I was. Finally, nobody should trust what I've typed here. I'm a lousy typist. Somebody already pointed out that I'd mistakenly given the wrong years of coverage for the Janeway records. You shouldn't trust any information you get second or third hand on the internet. You should get the film of the Gen. Mag of NJ and search yourselves, to make sure I gave it to you correctly or for alternative spellings I may have missed, or other names in your heritage. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Cheryl" <tohocheho@bellsouth.net> To: <NJWARREN-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, August 30, 2006 1:02 PM Subject: [NJWARREN] RE: Marilyn=Grandin & Janeway Acct. Looking for "death date and burial location" of ggg grandfather Philip Angle / Engle, s/o William Engle. Philip was on the 1850 Knowlton census. 1860 in Michigan his wife Sidney is a widow. Assume Philip died between 1850 - 1860, possibly before the family moved to Michigan? William Engle / Angle baptised June 10, 1733 at Readington Reformed Dutch Church in Hunterdon Co., NJ. Where is he buried, and when did he die??? Any help would be very appreciated and thank you in advance, Cheryl Angle HORNE

Re: SHIPMAN query I am related thru Jacob Shipman born 1694 Germany (I had thought his father could be Harmon). He married "Maria Rosina Catherine" Hendershot Oct 1715 and lived in Tewksbury Twp, Hunterdon County, NJ I believe he had a brother Daniel who married Elizabeth Burleson and went south to Kentucky. There are also two sisters, Christina who married Casper Hendershot, Catherina who married a Ruloffsen, two brothers, Nicolaus and Friederich. Nicolaus is a witness to Jacob's will in 1761 I believe there was also a half-brother, Daniel who married Abigail Burleson. He migrated to VA and NC. The Janeway information from Marilyn confirmed Jacob had a brother Nicholas. I do not have proof of this - it is only what I learned from computer searching when I began my genealogy career only three years ago. I will go over your previous posting and try and see if it fits. You may email me off list if you like. Jacob and Catherine Hendershot had a daughter Hannah Janetjie who married Jacob Cummins and that is who I am descended from. Carol

Grandin Fulling Mill records, which span the 1775-1785 period. Grandin was in present-day Hamden, south of Clinton, Hunterdon Co. These were also business records, showing people bringing wool to the mill to be fulled. Is there any mention of the names LEMON, CURRENT, or BARTON? thank you Marilyn Current
