Hello All, I have scanned and uploaded another 10 pages of the book "Collections of the New Jersey Historical Society Vol. IX". You can view the book at http://www.midatlanticarchives.com Also, thanks to those who got back to me with help in tracking down the NJ branch of my Eastburn family. I should probably know the answer to this question, but I don't. I have been on the midatlantic archives site, but do not know how to find specific information. Is there an indes to family names. A lot of my maternal ancestors were from N.J.. Hunterdon , Sussex and then Warren County. Do I have to read every page to see if they are listed? Thanks. Absolutely - the old 1822 records indicate the REAL NAME of this graveyard is Gravel Hill. Blairstown was named Gravel Hill around this time from aprox. 1822-1839. The property is next to Blair Academy but not owned by Blair Academy. John Insley Blair donated the land to the First Pres. Church on Main Street to be used as a burial ground since the church had very little land surrounding it. J.I. Blair, Vails, etc. are burried in his private family plot behind the old stone wall which he had erected. The oldest marker in the cemetery is that of Benjamin Smith (Smyth) who died in 1769. At that time Blairstown was named for him. It was called Smith's Mills since Smith owned a grist mill and a saw mill very close to where the present day mill owned by Blair Academy still stands along Main Street. The old cemetery is just up the hill and just west of that old mill. It is a restoration still on-going today. The church moved down on Route 94 many years ago next to the American Legion and could care less about maintaining their old cemetery properly. I met someone from that church in Blairstown last year and asked about the old cemetery. He stated they don't even want to bother cutting the grass anymore, no one has the time and no one really cares about the graveyard. It is badly vandalized and there are always kids playing in it. The man living next to the cemetery told me it's a disgrace and that the church does nothing about it. Pass the plate around at the next sermon and buy a stinking fence or something. Thats the problem with most (not all) church yard cemeteries in New Jersey. BUT the churches all want our hard earned money. Volunteer to at least fix the stones & mow the grass. > > Sue Low <sbclow@msn.com> wrote: > Wendy, > > There is a headstone missing in the Methodist Church Cemetery at Columbia. Listers, I'm so glad this topic came up--I've wondered for a long time how the diminutive ending "tje" is pronounced. Is the "j" interchangable with an "i", and is it like the ending on "Susie" or "Katie"? I have Dutch ancestors and would like to know how to say the names. Unfortunately my job (and personal life) restrictions has caused me to become very in-active with this fine group of committe-appointed (un- paid) volunteers. But if anyone desires a printed list of burials from Gravel Hill Cemetery (est-1769) and/or Blairstown Union Brick Cemetery, they can email me at the following address: northwarrenphotography@yahoo.com. If you do find you have a distant relative buried at either location, why not send a small donation to the commission to help with the upkeep and/or repairs that are constantly needed? You can contact the chairperson at historicpres@blairstown-nj.org. Helen Parisi. To All: Brian Rhodes is the person to contact. He took a forgotten , overgrown, weed infested eyesore and turned it into the pride of Blairstown and Blair Academy. The old gravel hill cemetery looked like an impossible task, but Brian did it with very little help from the rest of us.The "missing" headstones had fallen over and were buried by dirt and leaves. It took probing and careful digging to unearth the 100 or so stones that Brian uprighted and repaired. There are still more under the earth ,but one person cannot do it all . Is that is the cemetery I am thinking of along Route 46, across from the old church that is now rented as apartments? Wendy, There is a headstone missing in the Methodist Church Cemetery at Columbia. A lady new that the marker was not where it should be and to have further damage done to the headstone, she took it in her house. She lives in the yellow house down the road on the right from the old Methodist Church. I have a small book on the Titus-Butz family. My town used to be call Butz Bridge. The Snell's history book also shows the spelling as Butt's Bridge.
