I missed some of the earlier messages in this thread, but if they lived near a family named PAUL, I'd look for a member whose first name was Theodore. It was common in the 19th century to name children first and last names after a member of the community or church, not necessarily related. Therefore, re your posting below, I'd look for the namesake as having both names. Marjorie, There is an index that is the first page of each book you click on, but I have not indexed every book as it is a big job, but I am trying. If there is not an index then you would have view each page unfortunately. Sorry I can't be of more help. Yes, sorry it is BELEVIDERE where the THEODORE PAUL mansion was. According to the History of Warren County, the THEODORE PAUL mansion was at the northeast corner of Market and water Street. Built prior to 1800, by THOMAS PAUL, who came here in 1792 or 1793. I am curious about this place and these people because my great grandfather's brother's name was THEODORE PAUL CUNNINGHAM b. 1874 in Washington NJ. I was puzzled about the PAUL as a middle name as no one in our family was or ever has been named PAUL. Maybe the mother worked for the PAUL family and just liked the sound of the name. Anyway, while reading the history of Warren County, I came across the reference to the PAUL family and that was why I asked. Thanks for the help. JUDY
Re:PAUL--I think you have the wrong town. To my knowledge there are no Market nor Water streets in Wash. They are in Belvidere at the traffic light. Don't know Paul - not in my family, but it seems to me I once heard the mansion was where the Food Mart is today, on the northwest corner. Warren Co. Hist. Soc may be able to help, or the Belvidere library. Good luck.

How strange! Jan, you caught my mixed metaphor, corrected it, then thought you were wrong, when, in fact, it was I who was wrong. I just checked what I wrote and see that I said "3000-word puzzle" when I meant "3000-piece puzzle." But I was also doing a crossword at the time! (I don't think I've ever seen a 3000 word puzzle!) In any case, genealogy is some kind of puzzle, that we can all agree on. I think I asked this question before but never received a response. Maybe the email got lost somewhere. Does anyone know anything about THEODORE PAUL who was the son of a prominent citzien of Warren County{ THOMAS PAUL} and who had a mansion. It was in Washington, corner of Market and Water Streets. JUDY
For me, the only way is to collect copies of ALL the original documents having to do with that surname in that area for that time and then piece it together like a 3000-word puzzle. Once you have records for as many Martinus(es) as exist, you can start to detect patterns...is one Martinus dead by TK year but another selling property in the same year? Things like that. Again, I remind people on this board to check the Easton (PA) Public Library web site where they're posting all the church record indexes for that area, some of which include NJ records. They were up to the letter K last time I checked. Ooops...I should have checked...Marilyn's doing a crossword puzzle, not a jigsaw puzzle...but the idea is the same! Sorry, Marilyn...I should have known! Jan
Judi, You might also take a look at the wife's family. I show that Jannetje Fries (of of the wives of the various Martinuses) had the maiden name Winterstein. I believe this information came from Bob Smith...but my genealogy software sometimes shifts references on me! The first entry in the Knowlton listing is for Anna Gertraut, daughter of Martinus Fries and _____, witnesses John Wilhelm _____ and Anna Gertraut, wife of Philip Schneider. I wouldn't be surprise if the wife of this Martinus was Anna Gertraut--and that Anna Gertraut Schneider is her mother. Sometimes it helps to start with a theory, then work to either prove or disprove it. To use Marilyn's metaphor, you pick up a lot of pieces of that jigsaw puzzle before you find a fit! Jan
Thank you Jan and Marilyn. Guess I was taking the info too literally....at least the spelling. On other internet sites Martinus is said to be the brother of Johannes Fries and they may have arrived here at the same time. I can only assume that Martinus Jr. is the son of Martinus Sr and nephew to Johannes. But...............Johannes also named a son Martinus. How would you go about determining who belonged to who and separating all of the Martinus'?????????? Thanks for any ideas you can provide. Judi, I think that there were two men named Martinus Fries--father and son. I think that Jannroe, Jannetge and Johanetta (as well as Johanna and Janetze) were all the same person. Note this baptism: Anna, daughter of Martinus Fries and Johanna Fries, born February 9, 1777, and baptized March 23, 1777. Witnesses: Martinus Fries, Sr., and Anna Maria Fries. The spellings for all the names in these and most early baptisms were all over the place. I've come to the conclusion that, given the name of the church, sometimes they had an English minister, sometimes a German minister...and that all the ministers were barely educated or severely learning disabled...with hearing loss which accounts for the wild spellings! A lot of these old German and Dutch baptisms make me think that the minister didn't know how to spell the names, so he kept adding letters until he was exhausted. It's also possible that we're looking at cousins named Martinus Fries. Remember that the first son born to a couple was named after the baby's father's father. So if a man named Martinus Fries had 10 sons, for instance, and each of his sons had a son, all those sons might be named Martinus Fries! I know this has muddied the waters far more than it's helped...sorry! I keep spelling it wrong. It's actually a diminutive. I keep spelling it dimunitive! More on diminutives, including Dutch, at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diminutive.
