    2. USGW Project NJSC
    3. Hello New Jersey Researchers, The New Jersey Historical Society has taken the next step in designing their web site. They are now looking for your input in the form of a survey. The survey is located at: <http://www.eduweb.com/njhs/survey.html> The first few questions are your basic info, then they ask about your children's interests and then about half way down, they get to the good stuff. You will notice some familiar questions/features when you get to the "Web Site Features" : ) Please remember that this is YOUR opportunity to affect the final web site design. Show them that Genealogists will be 95% of their visitors. Thank You, Glenn G. Geisheimer <[email protected]> NJ State Coordinator USGenWeb Project <http://www.rootsweb.com/~njgenweb/index.html>

    1. [NJWARREN] Worrinsville/Warrenville/Weirtown
    2. Greetings, A generous 'cousin' has just sent me a copy of a ledger compiled by my supposed ancestor William Wier (1775-1835). This ledger was apparently kept to track billing for his store at 'Worrinsvill' during the 1830s. I presume that 'Worrinsvill' was really 'Warrensville' which appears on some maps a few miles north of Hackettstown in Allamuchy Township. Other maps call this village 'Wiertown' or 'Wiretown', perhaps named after William's family? I was wondering if anyone new anything more about Wiertown or the Wier family. I believe they are related to the Wier/Weir/Wire/Weyer family of Roxbury and Washington TWPs in Morris County. Some of the names on the ledger are: Philip Dufford, John Blackwill, Richard Stephens, Elijah Blackwill, Robert Codner, George Dorsonthord, Walter Tharp, Luis Valintine, Hosakiah Drake, Jacob Trimmer, Samuel Yawger, Conrad Fron, William Wack, Gilbert Trimmer, John Benidick, Andrew Wack, David W Miller, Jacob Carn, George Wack, William Stils, Dr. Samuel Wilet, Robert Hite, Samuel Dorland, William Stephens, Ezra Pool, George Bibbee, Moses Aplegate, Tomas Lake, William Grandine, John Sharp, Andrew Bay, William Delicker, John Durnburger, plus many others that I can't make out. I've tried to preserve the original spelling in the ledger. Regards, Rick Novak

    3. As an update on my concern about opening attachments with rootsweb addresses: I subscribed to [email protected], in the digest form. First time I've subscribed to Digest form. I heard from many list managers that rootsweb 'never' sends attachments. That they are stripped before going out, whatever that means. I did not know that the Digest form comes through as an attachment from the list, and so deleted the first three or four I received. But then ran a virus scan, gritted my teeth, and opened the attachment (actually two). They are census lookups. But I ran virus scan immediately after opening, just in case. All clear. I do think that the distinction needs to be established between Digest form attachments, and other kinds of attachments from outside sources. Ruth in GA

I recommend that you do the same. Go to <http://www.sarc.com/avcenter/venc/data/pf/[email protected] .removal.tool.html > (watch the wrap around ) They have a free downloadable tool to remove it. Rootsweb does not accept attachments in its maillists, so if you get a message from the maillist (you can usually tell because the TO: line will be NJWARREN-L, PALOOKUP-L, etc)and this message has an attachment it is probably a virus and did not come through the Rootsweb server. If the message came directly from someone on the list to you, please be suspect. If you do not want to get antivirus software, be sure to backe up your hard drive often because a virus will make you lose everything. 3. Does anyone have any information on the Probasco family that Snell mentions in his "History of Sussex and Warren Counties, New Jersey". He mentions that one of the first owners of land in the Broadway Village area of Franklin Township were members of a family named Probasco, but he doesn't identify the names of who these Probascos are. He does mention that there was a dispute over land between this Probasco family and a Col. William McCullough. Any information appreciated on the identity of this Probasco family. 3. Hello New Jersey Researchers, Yesterday, I met with a member of the web development team for the New Jersey Historical Society. We discussed content for the upcoming NJHS web site. Among items discussed were: 1. A complete listing of their holdings. 2. Mail in lookup requests. 3. On line maps of early New Jersey, counties and towns. 4. The history of the organization. 5. Their hours of operation. 6. Directions to the Society 7. Membership in the Society 8. Hotel accommodations near the Society for visitors. 9. Mass transit facilities for visitors. 10. Parking facilities for visitors. 11. Restaurant facilities for visitors. 12. Events sponsored by the Society 13. A form to preorder documents for viewing that are not on site. 14. Posting of photos of New Jersey 15. Links to other libraries that have additional or complimentary information. 16. What to expect from a visit to the Society. 17. On line store. 18. On site research fees for mail in research (for research, not just a lookup) 19. Putting their cemetery holdings on line. 20. User imputed databases. 21. User query system that will be answered by staff members or other visitors. 22. User discussion area. 23. Search engine that will search the entire site, including User sections and holdings. 24. Asking for volunteers to put NJHS data on line, such as the cemetery lists, rosters. 25. A Section that tells what information they have that is unique to the NJHS. 26. Web site forms for various uses, including research requests. 27. User suggestion area. 28. A "How-To Research" guide 29. Turnaround time for lookups and research requests. When I asked who the web site would be aimed at, I was told History Buffs, Education Systems and Genealogists. I replied that I hoped that it wasn't in that order and that I would estimate that at least 90% of the web site visitors would be Genealogists doing research. I also stressed that Lookup Requests and Research Requests would skyrocket and that they should be prepared for that. The last item that I stressed was the NJHS experience for visitors. Visitors should know before arriving: 1. How to get to the NJHS easily. 2. Where they can park, have lunch. 3. Have a 'game plan' of what they can do and how to do it before they enter the site so visitors/researchers can maximize their time with research and not with learning the system. 4. Be able to 'order' off site documents prior to their arrival so these documents will be ready for immediate research. I don't know what the final web site will include but the initial web site should be on line by the end of the year. Thank You, Glenn G.
