    3. I have noticed a major drop off in letters to the list serve in the last two weeks. Today, for the first time in I don't know how long, I didn't have any mail come in from the list. I can only attribute this to the horrible tragedy we have all suffered through as of late. As we work work through our national grief, it is important to stay connected to others: our families, our friends, and those whom we know in passing. This includes staying involved in our daily activities, even those that bring us joy. It would seem to me that the list is a good way to stay in touch with others, to work toward normal activities. In times of stress having an activity that brings joy is important. In this era of our nation's history it is important to reach out to others, but it is also important to continue doing those things you enjoy. If you give up joy and retreat, then those who sought to do us harm have won. I look forward to seeing mail from all of you in the days to come. It does bri! ghten my day!

    1. [NJWARREN] Shanley's of Oxford, what resources are available?
    2. Shaun Martin
    3. I am looking for information on John Shanley and his family, who lived on Academy Street, Oxford in 1880. At the time, John lived with his wife Catherine (Regan) and daughter, Jessie. John and Catherine were both 58 at the time and were born in Ireland. Daughter Jessie was 19 and listed as born in England. They had at least two other daughters. Sabina was 20 and lived in Belvidere where she worked as a servant. Elizabeth (my gg grandmother) was 16 and lived in Pittsburgh where she was a servant. Sabina and Jessie eventually moved to Pittsburgh as well, but I have lost trace of Catherine and John. I also believe there were other children. In 1870, Oxford Township, there appears to be a John Shanley of an appropriate age (45) with a son, Thomas. Both are listed as being born in England. I suspect the Shanleys moved to England from Ireland and then to New Jersey. Any information on this family would be greatly appreciated. I have lots of info to share on their descendants. The fact that they were in New Jersey has taken me by surprise. I am unfamiliar with resources available in Warren County (birth, marriage, death records, etc.). Any info on resources would be very helpful as well. Shaun --- Shaun Martin --- [email protected] --- EarthLink: It's your Internet.

    3. George lived in an area called Warford's Rocks and indeed married Abigail Warford in1742. I know a little about George and his family but would like to know more. Why he moved from Perth Amboy to the west N.J.? Did he really sequester boats to ferry Geo. Washington to Trenton? Is the County of Warren really named after him or his family, most of whom stayed in the area? Who were his ancestors-- I know of his father Thomas the proprietor? I would like to know more of his children's actions and doings. I am descended from his son Thomas who moved on to Ohio in1798. I am quite willing to share what I know. Malcolm

    1. [NJWARREN] Grammarians: 17th, 18th, 19th century use of 'thee' and 'thou'
    2. Catherine R. Buck
    3. This probably is also a question for archeological historians, professional or hobbyist. Can anyone shed light on the widespread use of 'thee' and 'thou' in addressing others. When reading a post from Habichnest on the Monmouth, NJ, list, subject: Slavery in Monmouth Co., the accused in a 1691 trial was addressed as "thou'. Which triggered my question about a family legend. My mother and her siblings always have been under the impression that their mother had been a Quaker before her marriage to a Catholic, because of some of her speech patterns. As a result, I have spent a lot of time looking through Quaker records for tracks of my grandmother's family and ancestors. If using 'thee' and 'thou' was common practice early on, would cultural heritage be ingrained enough so that it took 150-200 years to die out of common use in the middle Atlantc colonies and states? In some research on churches existing in Middlesex and Monmouth Counties in 1750 +/-, one book referred to the Presbyterians practice of addressing others as 'thee' and 'thou'. That was the first time I encountered a description of this practice. Did the Baptists, and maybe the English speaking Dutch Reformed and Pennsylvania Germans also follow this practice? In other words, everyone. The fact that some of my ancestors lived in Chester or Bucks Counties, or certain NJ counties, may mean that they were not neccesarily Quakers - that it was a common method of address among all English speakers at this time. ?? All opinions are welcome. The further back one goes, the harder becomes the nitty-gritty of searching, doesn't it? Ruth in GA
