Ruth, I don't know how much help it will be with dates, but the book you were probably reading was "The Hunterdon County New Jersey Militia, 1792" compiled by Hiriam E. Deats, sec. of the Hunterdon County Hist. Soc., pub. 1936 in Flemington, NJ. I copied pages during my last trip to the Hunterdon Co. Library in May. As to dates, it charged the officers with enrollment of "every free and able-bodied white male citizen between the ages of 18 and 45". An additional quote from the intro: " the book containing the enrollment of the Hunterdon County Militia, compiled pursuant to the law of 1792, and from which the following records were copied, was formerly on file in the County Clerk's office, but is now in the Public Record Office at Trenton"...I assume it now resides in the NJ State Archives. Unfortunately, I didn't copy the pages for Kingwood. I do however have the lists of officers for Reading, Lebanon, Tewkesbury, Kingwood, Alexandria, and Bethlehem Townships. (your Moses wasn't listed among the officers). I also have the full list for Alexandria Twp., a list of the Amwell Twp. Exempts (not serving), and a partial list of Bethlehem Twp. (Abel, Mathias to Farrow, William). A note to Fran & John...there are the following GANNOES' in the Alexandria Twp. list: Richard, Samuel, Stephen, William. If anyone would like me to look for names in my very limited areas, I'd be more that willing...wish that I'd copied the entire book, now that I'm back in FL.! Hi, folks...... With all the credit belonging to John O'Brien, I've just added Washington Memorial Cemetery, Warren County, to my web site. The file John sent me was so huge, I needed to break it into TWENTY SEVEN separate pages in order to make it readable on the net. It took me months (ok...so I took time off to enjoy the summer!) to cut and paste each cell into new files, and I can't imagine the time it took John to do the transcription in the first place! You can see this transcription beginning at http://www.raub-and-more.com/warrencemeteries/washcem/a.html Jan Reuther http://RAUB-and-more.com

I have great uncles who worked there, beginning in the 30s or 40s, and continued til they either died(while on the job) or retired. I was wondering how to obtain information, as to when they began their employment (this information would help me figure out when they moved from Luzerne County in Pennsylvania). Does anyone have any ideas? Or is this an impossible task - i.e. Beth Steel can't give out this information? Thanks in advance, Denise Slattery (Oklahoma City, OK) >> Denise: My ex-husband's father transported steel from Pittsburgh, PA to Pittsburg, CA aboard ships that were owned by Bethlehem Steel (I think). He was a Bos'n's Mate aboard the S. S. Columbia in the 1960s to 80s. I divorced my ex-husband in 76, but assume his father was still shipping out after that until his asthma got the best of him and he couldn't do it anymore. Anyway, I would think that if I wanted to write to Bethlehem Steel and inquire as to the time period he worked there and inquired about his job title that I would be able to get it. I would think that if I knew which Bethlehem Steel plant he worked at you should be able to write to them at that address. I would cite enough facts in my letter to indicate I knew he worked there and that I was seeking confirmation that the information I have is correct. If your fella is deceased, indicate this. That way, I would think, they won't send back a letter asking that he contact them directly for the information. If you are related to the man, state your relationship such xyz is my uncle. You really don't need to say, I don't believe, he is my xyz cousin 3x removed. I don't think the people who are currently working at the company would know what kind of relationship that is, so if you say cousin, that should be sufficient. Keep the letter short and to the point. The worst case scenario is a letter in return that says info not available. I would think that if you get a nastygram back that you might have to cite the freedom of information act or something like this, but then this act may only apply to government agencies and not to private companies. I haven't checked out the law, I would suggest everyone check out that law to see what it actually says so that when you quote it in a letter to a government agency or any place that it might apply, you know what it means. Does anyone have Thomas Cyphers married to Laura Transue? They had three children buried in Shawnee Presbyterian Cemetery, Monroe Co., PA, and one son James B Cyphers 1865-1915 buried in Stroudsburg Cemetery James' death certificate says father Thomas born in Philipsburg, mother Laura born in Stroudsburg
I saw in a private printed book that in 1792 Moses PETTY was a member of the Kingwood Militia, Hunterdon County. Moses is my gr gr gr grandfather. I need to document every step. Will someone suggest where I look for the documentation for his service in the NJ Militia. Does anyone know what information is contained on whatever documents were used at the time. I'm hoping to find his age in 1792. Because it may give me a clue what year he was born. He had to be at least 18 years old. Thanks for any suggestions -- they're all welcome. Ruth in GA

Regarding how to find when your uncles began working at Bethlehem Steel, here is one possible way of narrowing down a date: Without looking it up, (and, people, don't send me corrections - I know where to look it up, I just don't have time right now) I think Social Security began circa 1936. Anyone who was already working at a company like Bethlehem Steel would have signed up then - or, if not then, when they did begin working for them. This, of course, does not take into account the possibility that your uncles worked for another SS-covered company before going to Bethlehem Steel. You can go to SS web site via Rootsweb or ancestry.com, feed in the name and it will process a letter that you can then use to send away for his application. It used to cost $7.00 and I think I heard that the price went up steeply this summer. (I just ignored that and sent $7.00 and got what I asked for.) Hi By chance would anyone know where the "Barnes" home in Phillipsburg was and if it is still there? Brenda
Hello - Below are a few items I turned up that I think are related to what you are looking for. In general, two terrific sites for finding used books are www.abebooks.com and www.bookfinder.com . http://www.pburglib.com/events.htm Phillipsburg Free Public Library Phillipsburg History in Pictures 10:00 - Noon on Saturday, November 3 Dr. Leonard Buscemi, the creator of the Phillipsburg-Easton Historical Calendar, will autograph his book Phillipsburg, the latest title in the "Images of America" series. Buy your copies from the Phillipsburg Chamber of Commerce ( downstairs in Town Hall) or at the signing for $19.95. Dr. Buscemi will also have the 2002 Phillipsburg-Easton Historical Calendar for sale, as well as limited quantities of older calendars. Proceeds from calendar sales will benefit the library (thank you, Dr. Buscemi!). Don't forget out-of-town family and friends ! PHILLIPSBURG HISTORICAL SOCIETY The place has an extensive photographic collection with a major contribution by local photographer and historian, Ron Wynkoop. For phone contact for further information, the numbers are: (908) 213-1409 or (908) 454-0816.
