    1. [NJWARREN] David P. Hawk
    2. Millard Hawk
    3. Hello. My name is Millard D. Hawk, and I am trying to research my ancestor, David P. Hawk. I know he was from Stewartsville, and is buried in the Old Greenwich Presbyterian Church Cemetery. Recently, I went to Stewartsville and found the graves of him, he wife (Elizabeth unknown) and several of his children. I have been unable to discover how David P. got to Stewartsville, (was he born there?) and who were his parents? I have a genealogy website for the Hawk Family:http://grumpyoldvanner.homestead.com/indexhtml.html but I have been unable to go back past David P. Hawk. (1773-1854) Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Millard Hawk (David P.Hawk>William D.Hawk>Wilson Hawk>Raymond Dewitt Hawk>Millard Lesher Hawk>Jack D. Hawk>Millard Hawk)

    1. [NJWARREN] Bird / Clarkson connection
    2. Judy Pisano
    3. I'm looking for any information that might connect the Clarkson family of NJ to the Bird family in the late 1700's. Two (so far unrelated) Bird families, one in Somerset Co and one in Sussex/Warren Co, have sons named Clarkson Bird. The Clarkson Bird of Sussex Co. had a brother Burtis Bird that moved to Ovid, Seneca Co, NY and then to Macon, Lenawee Co, MI and there was a Daniel Clarkson who seemed to move with him. Another of Burtis' brothers (Joseph) named one son Daniel and another Joseph Clarkson. Burtis' mother's maiden name is not known. She might have been a Clarkson. Doses anyone know of a Joseph Clarkson of NJ that had children named Daniel and Euphemia (Bethany)? Thanks, Judy ===== Judy Jamieson Pisano [email protected] "The Bird Families of New Jersey" <http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~birdnj> __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. [NJWARREN] BERTHA LANTERMAN and the horseless carriage
    2. Esther Read/Tim Doyle
    3. LANTERMAN, FIRTH, HAYNES, OGDEN, READ, SUTTON The saying goes that behind every successful man is a woman. BERTHA BERNICE LANTERMAN of Frelinghuysen Township is certainly one Warren County woman who deserves to be recognized in this way. If Bertha hadn't been at home cooking and cleaning and playing hostess to her husband's business associates, Elwood Haynes may not have been as successful as he was. Given the times she probably could not have worked out of the home if she wanted, but she made contributions to the early automobile industry just by being there for Elwood. Bertha was the daughter of WILLIAM DARIUS LANTERMAN and MARY CROSSLEY FIRTH; the granddaughter of JACOB LANTERMAN and RACHEL READ (they were first cousins); great-granddaughter of JOHN READ and ELIZABETH OGDEN; and great great-granddaughter of JOSEPH READ and SARAH SUTTON. I've cut and pasted the section on Bertha from my web page below (READ FAMILY CONNECTIONS)www.charm.net/~edrtjd/readgen/ BERTHA BEATRICE LANTERMAN5, was born 27 February 1858 in Frelinghuysen Township, Warren County, New Jersey and died 1 September 1933 in Howard County, Indiana. She married Elwood Haynes on 21 October 1887, in Portalnd, Indiana. Elwood was the son of the Honorable Jacob M. and Hilinda S. Haynes. He was born 14 October 1857 in Portland, Indiana and died 13 April 1925 in Howard County, Indiana. In 1881, he graduated from the Worcester Institute of Technology in Massachusetts. In 1884, he entered the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland as a graduate student in chemistry and biology. Upon graduation he became head of the chemistry department of the Eastern Indiana Normal School in Portland. In 1886, he became manager of the Portland Natural Gas and Oil Company. He married Bertha Lanterman in 1887. In 1890, Elwood was promoted to field superintendent of the Indiana Natural Gas and Oil Company. The family relocated to Kokomo, Howard County, Indiana in 1892, where they r! esided until at least Elwood's death. During the early 1890s Elwood began to experiment with engines for a "horseless carriage." On 4 July 1894, he successful tested the first such vehicle on a road outside of Kokomo. Thus was born the American automobile industry. His automobile was known as the Haynes. Elwood went on to invent "stellite" and "stainless steel" (he shared the patent for the later with a British gentleman). In 1912, he opened the Haynes Stellite Works in Kokomo. Elwood Haynes and Bertha Lanterman had four children: (i.) MARIE F. HAYNES6, was born 1889 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana and died unknown. (ii.) SON HAYNES6, was born 1890 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana and died unknown. (iii.) BERNICE HAYNES6, was born 1892 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana and died unknown. In 1909 she was a senior at KoKomo High School. (iv.) MARCH HAYNES6, was born 3 January 1896 in Portland, Jay County, Indiana (according to Film #2034462, Family History Library), although in light of the fact that the family had moved to KoKomo in 1892 it seems more likely that he was born there and died 15 January 1968. His last known residence, according to the Social Security Death Index, was Palo Alto, Santa Clara County, California. March married Hazel (Last Name Unknown). She died 23 May 1925.

    1. [NJWARREN] ELDER JONATHAN S. THOMPSON
    2. Esther Read/Tim Doyle
    3. DRAKE; FREESE; HAUG; MELLICK; READ; THOMPSON Elder or Rev. JONATHAN S. THOMPSON Born: July 1793 Died: 10 December 1866, in or near Rochester, Monroe County, New York Minister of: Johnsonburg Christian Church 1826 to 1836. He may have begun his career in New England, records are unclear. In 1814, he formed the Galway Christian Church, the first Christian Church organized in New York State. Thompson arrived in Warren County in 1824 and began to organize a Christian Church in Johnsonburg. The church was formally founded in 1826. He preached the charging sermon at the founding of the Hope Christian Church in 1842. His name appears frequently as the minister in wedding records of Warren County. After 1842 he appears to be in New York State. Buried: that's a good question. Snell's history of Warren County states that he is buried in Union Brick and gives the date 2 February 1829 (page 652). However, checking the stones in Union Brick I discovered that the only Thompson who died on that date was his wife Mary, who Snell does not list. Snell only gives the seond wife, Sarah, who died in 1831. There is no stone for Jonathan. The New Jersey Geneological Society also repeats this error in their transcript of Union Brick. I get the feeling tht they used Snell's list as a baseline for their transcript and added to it, that they didn't start all over again in the 1930s when they did the transcript. Thompson died in Rochester, New York in 1866. Although ice caskets had been invented by that time, it was an expensive way to ship a body, even by rail. It is more likely that he is buried in New York with his fourth wife. By the way, ice caskets are pretty wild. Basically you have a casket with a white tin enameled interior.! The ice goes in the bottom, then the body is placed in a metal insert which goes in the casket. These were used mid-century before embalming became popular. Embalming came into use just around the Civil War, was used to a limited extent during the war (the U.S. Aramy really couldn't afford to embalm every Battlefield causalty for transport home). After the war it slowly gained in popularity and by the 1880s was in general use in urban areas, not sure when it caught on in rural areas. If you're ever in Baltimore, Maryland, go visit Westminster Presbyterian Church (now a museum/reception Hall) where Edgar Allen Poe is buried. They have an ice casket down in the crypts (empty of course...Edgar is out in the yard somewhere!). Jonathan Thompson married 4 times. First: MARY (LAST NAME UNKNOWN) Born: 1791 Died: 2 February 1829, buried Union Brick Cemetery, Blairstown Township Second: 11 February 1830, Warren County SARAH HAUG Born: 1791 Died: 13 September 1831, buried Union Brick Third: 21 March 1833, Warren County JANE READ, the widow DRAKE Born: 19 January 1805, near Hope, Warren County Died: 29 January 1837, buried Swayze Cemetery, Hope Township Daughter of SAMUEL READ and MARIA H. FREESE Her first husband: GEORGE W. DRAKE, (1 March 1799-8 January 1830), buried Swayze Cemetery Fourth: by 1842 SUSAN M. (LAST NAME UNKNOWN) Born: circa 1820 Died: 1882, Monroe County, New York Known Children: SARAH M. THOMPSON Born: circa 1821 Died: 21 April 1842, aged 21 years Buried: Johnsonburg, Christian Church burial ground. Transcript of stone says she was daughter of Rev. Jonathan and S. Thompson. This would imply Sarah Haug as mother. However, Jonathan was probably married to Mary in 1821, he didn't marry Sarah Haug until 1830. There is a possiblity that dates in transcript are wrong or that the stone actually says Jonathan S. Thompson without the "and" between "Jonathan" and the "S." Sarah Thompson was dead by 1850, as her husband appears on the census with another wife. Married: Peter Mellick (1825-29 May 1855, buried Johnsonburg Christian). Children: SON, died as infant; ANNAH M. MELLICK, born circa 1838. WILLIAM A. THOMPSON Born: 10 November 1834 Died: 1919, Rochester, Monroe County, New York Mother: Jane Read ABIGAIL J. THOMPSON Born: 1836 or 1837 Mother: Jane Read Lived with grandparents Samuel and Maria Read in Hope after Mother's death. They also raised her half-sister by Jane's first marriage: Maria R. Drake (28 June 1829-10 January 1846), there may have been another Drake daughter. Jane's son Hezekiah Drake died 9 September 1831, age 3 years, 9 months, 7 days, before Jane married J.S. Thompson. I. KIMBALL THOMPSON Born: 1843 Died: 1853 Mother: Susan JULIA A. THOMPSON Born: 1846 Died: 1870 Mother: Susan Any additional information about children, grandchildren, step-children would be great!

    3. CUMMINS, MIDDLESWORTH, READ or REED, SNYDER, SUTTON JOHN CUMMINS Born: Unknown Died: between circa 1834 and 1840 Married: between 1830 and 1832 LAVINA READ Born: 22 August 1805 Died 7 January 1864, buried Union Brick Cemetery, Blairstown Township, Warren County, New Jersey Daughter of DAVID READ and ANNA MIDDLESWORTH, both buried Union Brick Cemetery Granddaughter of JOSEPH READ and SARAH SUTTON Children: MARY ANN CUMMINS Born: circa 1832 Died: Unknown Married: JOHN W. SNYDER JOHN CUMMINS Born: circa 1834 Died: Unknown Married: Unknown John Cummins the father petitioned the Orphans Court of Warren County during the June 1832 Term to appoint commissioners to divide the real estate of his late father-in-law David Read (died 1831). In June 1832, only John's wife Lavina Read Cummins and her brother Isaac S. Read were of legal age. Her other brothers and sisters were all minors and could not sign a deed of partition or division. These siblings were Joseph M., Sarah Ann (Sally), Eleanor (Ellen) and David J. (Jackson) Read. John Cummins is not listed as Head of Household on the 1840 United States Census, his wife Lavina Cummins was the head. There were two chldren in the house, assumed to be the two children listed above. I am interested in tracing the descendants of the children of John Cummins and Lavina Read. Would also like to know Joseph's parentage and dates of birth and death.

One possiblity is ABE MIDDLESWORTH, who had daughter LAVINA MIDDLESWORTH (23 July 1789-27 July 1833), she married circa 1806, WILLIAM GREEN HOWELL. Anna Middleworth Read's two oldest children were named Abraham and Lavina, an interesting coincidence.
