Dear List, I am attempting to confirm information sent to me by a Towneley Hall researcher in reference to my query about my ggg grandfather, Caleb Townley of Elizabethtown, N.J. Other than my gg grqandmother's death certificate, the only reference I have found on him was on the "Old Newark" site where his marriage to Deborah Ann Heming is recorded as 24 Feb 1829. Below is the information that was sent to me. (Caleb's father, Effingham, is not to be confused with Effingham, Jr. who would have been his uncle.) 1986 John Robertson of Somerville, N.J., gave to Towneley Hall a pedigree of the Towneleys of Elizabethtown from who he was descended. The name Caleb only appeared once and it seems that this Caleb was the youngest of 5 sons and 2 daughters of Effingham and Rhoda Towneley. Effingham was born August 1, 1759 and died May 2, 1828, Rhoda's maiden name is not known but it seems she was born around 1766 and died October 26, 1823. Both Effingham and Rhoda were buried in St Johns, Elizabethtown N.J.. Mr Robertson's pedigree does not provide any further evidence concerning the children of Effingham and Rhoda so I cannot say if this Caleb was the one who married Deborah Ann Heming on February 24, 1829, however there is nothing in any of the dates that rule it out. If Rhoda was born in 1766 it is not unreasonable to estimate that her youngest was born around 1804 and married in 1829. As regards Effingham, the pedigree shows him to be the great-grandson of Colonel Richard Towneley, the first of Elizabethtown, through his grandfather Effingham (born around 1690) and father Richard (born December 18, 1720).
