Abraham Clark b. 15 Feb 1725/26, Elizabethtown, NJ, (the only child of Thomas Clark and Elizabeth Winans) m. Sarah Hatfield, b. circa 1728, (daughter of Isaac Hatfield and Sarah Price) d. 02 Jun 1804. Abraham died 15 Sep 1794, buried: Rahway Cemetery, Rahway, NJ. He was a Signer of the Declaration of Independence. He was known as Abraham Clark, Jr., to distinguish him from his uncle Abraham. He and sarah had ten children -- a respectable number considering the time he spent helping people and on civic duties -- but ten is quite a bit less than seem to be attributed to him on modern websites and message boards. Researchers interested in his descendants should begin with an Article by Ann Clark Hart in The Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey, April 1932, which sets forth the then known descendants of The Signer. That article has been reprinted in "Genealogies of New Jersey Families" [Geneal. Pub. Co. Balt. 1996] Vol. 1, page 145. While Ann Hart was not infallible, the article is relatively well done [NPI] and her sources are cited, including, for the ten children, the inclusion of a photostat of the listing by Rev. Edwin F. Hatfield, in his handwriting, from a genealogical manuscript he had prepared for publication. The list also fits with the Wills of Abraham Clark, and of Abraham's father. There are a number of obituaries published in Union County in the mid 1900s which identify the deceased as a decendant of The Signer, and I haven't seen one yet which was correct. I am posting this, also, because there have been recent forum list postings showing other "sons" [one with a birth date the same year as Cavalier, above]. I don't like to burst people's bubbles, but assume we are also seeking for accuracy, and I would be happy to exchange data or try to answer questions. [Of course I will probably refer most of the questions to David Kane! <G> ] Harman Clark [a distant cousin but not a descendant]. [email protected]
