    3. The 9th New Jersey Volunteers were formed at Elizabeth, NJ in 1861. My gggrandfather, John Peter RITTER was one of the founders. At the age of 44 he went off to war and spent many months in the swamps of North Carolina, with resulting dysentery, etc. There is an interesting history of the unit written by a swash- buckling type who formed the New Jersey Guauves (not exactly the word or spelling I want but someone will correct me.
