My gr-gr-grandfather, Walter Morrel Bramhall (b. 1839 NY, d. 1913 NJ) grew up in New Jersey, around S. Orange and Rahway (according to letters written in 1906). He wrote about being in the same regiment with other Rahway boys, some of whom were still his buddies. He was in the 6th Independant Battery, NY Light Artillery. I was initially surprised that he joined a NY regiment when he lived in NJ, but it looks as though it was fairly common, with many families spread between the two states in and aroung NY City. So - if you can't find someone in a NJ regiment, it's worth trying NY. Hope this helps someone. Sandy Smith [email protected]
