The best genealogical collection in and regarding Union County families is at the Westfield Library. There's a lot on early Elizabeth families at the NJ Historical Society in Newark, but there's so much there it's difficult to know where to look. Special Collections at the Alexander Library in New Brunswick also has a lot of early material. The Westfield Library has city directories for Westfield going back to about 1900. The earliest 10 or so years are photocopied from larger books, bound in clear plastic sheets and shelved with the later years. They also have the Union County reels of the state and federal censuses, plus microfilm of most issues of the Westfield Leader (and a few years of the Union County Standard). The library is located at 550 East Broad Street. Phone is (908) 789-4090. As of 1997, hours were 10 am to 9 pm Mon to Thurs, and 10 am to 5 pm Fri and Sat. Call to confirm this is still correct.
