The Rahway Cemetery is indeed understaffed. They just have that tiny little building. I don't think very good records were kept early on. This was not a sophisticated private cemetery like Fairview in Westfield or Evergreen in Elizabeth. It started out as a public ground like the Colonial Cemetery in Westfield, which by the way doesn't even have an office. Fortunately, enough organizations have adopted the Colonial Cemetery so that it is maintained and copies of the transcriptions are readily available. I suspect the problem at Rahway is a high volume of inquiries, limited staff to respond and sketchy records. But they should tell you this up front before accepting your money . . .
