Tom- Sounds like you checked the American passenger lists but perhaps not the Hamburg passenger lists, which are indexed. The LDS have all these lists and indexes, along with a great brochure that explains how to use them. (The indexes are a little tricky.) The advantage the Hamburg lists have over the American counterparts is that the Hamburg lists generally name the exact town of former residence in Europe. Something like 40 or 60% of all the immigrants from Germany and points east who came to the US during the height of immigration passed through Hamburg. Generally, if you do find your ancestor on an American list, and you need more information, you should check the Hamburg list (since you already have the ship name and date!). Good luck!
