My relative William Jay Magie (born in Elizabeth in 1832 & died there in 1917) was not only Chief Justice of the NJ Supreme Court (1897-1900) and NJ Chancellor (1900-1908) but also an excellent genealogist. Several relatives of mine are VERY grateful for the fine family research he did in Scotland & NJ, especially in the 1890s. My brother Bill and I have copies of some of WJM's ca. 1915 notes that were to be part of a genealogy that he never finished before his death on 15 Jan 1917 at his N. Broad St. home in Elizabeth. In these notes, WJM says that the ca. 1699 home of our ancestor John McGhie (AFN:P241-VV), born in Scotland ca. 1659 and died at Elizabeth in 1735, was located at what would now be approx. 124 Chilton St, near the SW corner of Chilton St. and Edgar Place-- although most of John's farmland seems to have been located to the northwest, along what is now Magie Ave. WJM also says that John's son Joseph (our ancestor also) sold the Chilton St. house and land to one JONATHAN HAMPTON in 1779, when Joseph apparently moved to a new home (not extant) on Magie Ave.-- and this is corroborated by Ernest L. Meyer's Revolutionary War map of Elizabethtown (pub. 1879). WJM indicates that foundations of the 1699 house were still visible in the 1830s. Dave, I'm not sure what house you're referring to near the corner of Chilton and Lincoln. The Meyer map shows a Crane house that was just west of there at the time of the Revolution-- NE of the Chilton-Elmora intersection. There's was also the ca. 1836 house of Joel W. Magie (brother of J. O. Magie, below) at 330 Elmora Ave, probably just south of Livingston Rd. In 1939, the Joel Magie House was identified by the US Dept. of Interior "as possessing exceptional architectural & historical interest"-- but nonetheless was leveled in 1950 to make way for a Jewish school. I'm not sure what's the oldest Magie house in Elizabeth. But it may be the ca. 1790 Federal style home of my ggg-grandfather Ezekiel Magie (1758-1826), a Revolutionary War vet, at 910 Magie Ave.-- sadly remodeled almost beyond recognition in the 1930s. Another old Magie house is the well-preserved home of Ezekiel's nephew John Magie (1785-1862) at 815 Magie Ave. and later occupied by John's son John Ogden Magie and his wife Mary Clark (daughter of Amos Clark?). It looks like a ca. 1840 house, but portions of it may date back to the mid-1700s. I haven't visited either of these houses since 1994-- and, if they have since been vaporized, I wish someone would PLEASE tell me. John (in Chicago).
