While we're on the subject, does anyone know what induced people from New Jersey to move to Southern Ohio in the late 1700's-early 1800's? While we can say that it was cheap land, etc., how did they really find out about it? Was it strictly word of mouth, or were there advertizements in the periodicals, etc.? Or perhaps people like John Cleaves Symmes who were promoting land speculation? Several of my ancestors went to Butler County in 1807, and many Westfield (Essex Co., NJ) people seem to have been there, or followed shortly thereafter.
