I am a new member of the list and am researching the SMITHSON family . My 4ggfather was John Smithson. He was reportedly from "Elizabethtown, NJ". He md Hannah COCHRAN(I don't know where) and they baptized 5 children at the First Presbyterian Church of NYC between 1774 and 1785. His daughter, Elizabeth Smithson, md Robert Pickering in NYC in 1801. She told her children that she was from Elizabethtown and remembered seeing George Washington at their home there in 1783. John Smithson paid taxes in Hanover and Chatham, Morris Co between the years 1780-1811. I am trying to figure out why they were back and forth between NYC and NJ and suppose that it had something to do with the Revolutionary War. Are there tax lists available for Elizabeth during this time period? Is there an index to wills during this period? I would appreciate any advice on researching these people, and hope to be able to contact anyone else researching the SMITHSON name. Thank You, Pat Payne in FL

Last night while checking something on the Brown family I got into the 1830 census for Union Twp, then in Essex County (on Ancestry.com). On the first page for Union, which I could easily recognize from the families was along Stuyvesant Ave (and possibly Stanley Terrace, then called Vauxhall Rd, just to be confusing) I found the following. My sense of the properties is that this list starts where Vauxhall Road enters Union from Essex County, and then turns on Stanley Terrace. William Day (40-50) with a substantial family. The widow Martha Day (40-50) with family Dr. Waldow Brown (30-40) with family John G. Mooney (30-40) with family Widow Martha Brown (70-80) Benjamin Brown (50-60) Rhoda Brown (40-50) Sarah Brown (70-80) Stephen Headley F.[or f] (20-30) Henry Brown (40-50) Most of this area was owned by Stephen Brown (1680-1767) and divided between his sons Caleb, Joel, and Benjamin, and most of the people here are descendants or widows of descendants. The ages and locations lead me to conclude: Martha Brown was the second wife of Stephen Brown (d. 1817), a son of Joel Brown. I do not know here last name. Sarah Brown is likely the widow of Nathaniel Brown, who died a youngish man in 1790. Nathaniel held land inherited from his father, Joel, along Lightning Brook. Rhoda Brown is Rhoda Durand, widow of Nathaniel and Sarah's son, Thomas, who died in 1825. The two young men in the house must be Ogden and Israel E. Brown; her middle son, Joseph, must be living elsewhere. The boys came into the estate of Thomas, previously owned by Nathaniel, son of Joel. Benjamin and Henry are the sons of Henry, the son of Benjamin Brown. The land Henry inherited from Stephen was partly in Essex (going back to John Brown's lands from the second division of Newark settlers) and partly land bought from John Ogden. Does anyone know anything about Doctor Waldo Brown? It certainly looks as if he must be connected to the Browns there. The Days may also be connected, but it would have to be back to an unknown daughter of Joel. The Mooneys purchased property owned by the Browns, and there is no apparent connection. Anyone interested in these families? Wilson Brown
Marian, All I could find is a yahoo map. There are two Grace Churches in Elizabeth, and the one at 205 1st Ave is close to Bond St. See: http://maps.yahoo.com/py/maps.py?Pyt=Tmap&addr=205+1ST+AVE&csz=ELIZABETH+NJ+07 206&Get%A0Map=Get+Map This one is Grace Church of Christ . The other one is Grace Episcopal Church is also close to Bond St..so I guess you would have to know the religion. This one is at 221 E. Jersey Street. I had the funeral home obtain DC's for me. Both DC's that I wanted were from the early 60's. The funeral home charged $5 each and mailed them to me. Hi, Has anybody checked vitalchek.com ? I tried it yesterday and I'll have to see what happens in 10 to 14 days. All you have to do is to click on the state that you need then the info. Bill
Ruth- I'm in digest mode, and I just got the most recent digest, so I now understand your question. This was the first I'd heard of this problem. Looks like a coordinated effort, so it may not matter whether you try the State or municipal Health offices. I'm checking into it. In the meantime, I will assume until informed otherwise that the State Archives does not have a similar policy, so records through 1878 should still be available there. Also, someone mentioned the professional researcher option for more recent records, which is always a good one. The births through 1923 and marriages and deaths through 1940 are available to the public on microfilm at the State Archives. Stay tuned! Hi Everyone I was interested in the Volunteer Club (that Dennis mentioned) that assists in locating the B,M, or D records on these people. In the state of NY only the recorder of these records or a town clerk (someone of similar authority), a paid employee has access to these records. The general public is not among them. They are not allowed to view the books. The books are not to be viewed by anyone without this stated authority even if the time of limitation has run out for that record. These books still contain information on some living people. Where does a club like this exist? The Libraries and Genealogy Societies however do volunteer and provide lookups through films, newspapers and etc. But I have not seen a volunteer working with Vitals, at least not where I have searched. Perhaps in some States it does exist. I would also like to mention that the State of Michigan just came down with a Supreme Court Ruling that people doing Genealogy have the same rights that any other public official, lawyer or person in obtaining these records and they cannot be treated separately or given any delay in having the information provided to them. My personal opinion is that if the necessity is there and people are providing the fee and enough revenue to obtain these records, then the Staffing should be adjusted accordingly. But the Steps taken in NJ would indicate that this is an out right refusal to provide that record to the public unless you provide all the information that is shown on the record. It would also appear to indicate, an out right refusal to do a Search for Genealogy purposes. If you provide all the information that is a lookup not a Search. I would like to know if a Lawyer can obtain it? Would an individual be seeking this information, if they had the information? Probably not, they would not be requesting the record from the Records Archive if they already had it.. I would like to see what the Freedom of Information Ruling would be on this. I think that this Law will have to adjusted in the future. Thanks for any additional input or information Regards Pat R
I don't know if the explaination for the change in policy was mentioned on the list yet, but it was brought up on another list I subscribe to. It seems that, post-Sept 11, it was decided that it was too easy to obtain a false identity in NJ because one could get a birth certificate for a deceased child, obtain a SS#, with nothing more than a name and date of birth. I don't see why this would extend to people born before 1900, but it seems that it is an all-or-nothing policy. You need to understand that these offices have limited staffing and genealogy interests are snowballing. Even with a high search fee they just do not have the time to search. And even with the exact date, charges are being constantly increased because of the demand which is exceeding the abilities of the staff. In some areas local genealogy clubs provide volunteers to these offices who assist the paid workers. Some of the volunteers have even been deputized so that they may enter the vault where the records are kept. See if the area you are interested in has such a club with volunteers assisting statistic offices. If so you may get assistance by joining that club, some may even provide free assistance. I believe the original email refered to the City/County however my situation was with the State Dept. of Health and Senior Services that refused despite that every information but her mother's maiden name was given to obtain a copy of Death Certificate from 1928. I believe you are correct when talking about the State Archieve for earlier B/M/D-pre 1878. The funny thing is I only sent a similar request in about 6 months ago with very little information known and I recieved a copy of it after the usual 4-6month wait?? Seems like somthing has change??? ----- Original Message ----- From: <garymaher@juno.com> To: <NJUNION-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, January 30, 2002 9:41 PM Subject: [NJUnion] Re: Vital Statistics Office > >Oh man!!!
