I am looking for any old cemeteries (big or small) or old churchyards in the area of the Cranford - Kenelworth, Union Township border. My ancestors Joseph and Sarah DUNHAM their son David M. DUNHAM lived on the DUNHAM farm, off of what is now Orange Avenue in Cranford. They are all listed on that farm in 1850 in what was then called Union Township. Any ideas or suggestions on how I might find them or any documentation of them would be of great help. Thanks in Advance. Dave from Long Island
Just wanted to let the list members looking for Coffey and Dunham/Singletary families, I have started a website for my families. I have posted what I believe to be true re Dunhams, and am waiting for information from the State of New Jersey for further information. I will be giving credit to all those who have help me with this project, and I will be adding information as time allows. I have also another page for my Grandmother's parents. If anyone has information would love to hear from you or if you know of possible family pass it on. Thank you www.geocities.com/jerseyjaydee
Thanks to RAdams505@aol.com, I now know that the age of tintypes goes at least far back as 1870.
Those old photos on metal are tintypes. They probably came from an amusment park or boardwalk booth. The images are most likely mirror-image, that is, right is left and left is right, due to the fact that there was no negative used in the process. The processing used is called reversal process, and it only takes a few minutes from camera to finished print. Maybe someone out there knows the range of dates, but I would expect it's 1910 to 1935.
Thanks for the info on the photos. Very interesting. I have some pictures that are on ferrous metal of some of my relatives. They look quite old, but I don't know how old. Is anyone out there familiar with this type of photo, and can they be transferred to photos? My niece took them to a photo shop, and they couldn't help her transfer them to photo paper. Is anyone researching CHAMBERLAIN? I seek information about and descendants of Rymer and Margaret (DUNLOP) CHAMBERLAIN. Their sons: Arthur, born 1866, and Herbert, born 1870, both in Plainfield, Union County, NY. I think Herbert was in Plainfield in 1900. Any information is appreciated. I can supply information on the DUNLOP family. Dorothy L. Miller
hello everyone, to clear up some things abut the state census's. there are no indexes at all, the years up to 1895 do not give much info. except the name with age given in a span of years. the later ones 1905,1915 are the same as the 1900,1910, but they are not indexed either. kevin j. olvaney
Dave is correct -- almost all of the 1890 Federal Census for NJ was destroyed in the fire that consumed most of this census nationwide. The only existing schedules of the general population are from Jersey City. However, the Veterans' schedules for NJ from the 1890 Federal Census are extant, so you can find Civil War vets there. The NJ State Censuses are great resources, but none of them are indexed, to my knowledge. The earlier years are skimpy on personal information but do list every member of the household. The later years are very informative. Gary ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less! Tom- Sounds like you checked the American passenger lists but perhaps not the Hamburg passenger lists, which are indexed. The LDS have all these lists and indexes, along with a great brochure that explains how to use them. (The indexes are a little tricky.) The advantage the Hamburg lists have over the American counterparts is that the Hamburg lists generally name the exact town of former residence in Europe. Something like 40 or 60% of all the immigrants from Germany and points east who came to the US during the height of immigration passed through Hamburg. Generally, if you do find your ancestor on an American list, and you need more information, you should check the Hamburg list (since you already have the ship name and date!). Good luck! Check out: http://www.rootsweb.com/~njunion/census.htm Censuses, particularly ones from 1850 onwards, offer many clues such as names of everyone in household, age, and place of birth. Different censuses included more or less information. When looking at pre-1860 censuses, remember before 1857, Union county was part of Essex county. For federal censuses visit a National Archives branch or local library or check out the genealogy pages <A HREF="http://www.nara.gov/genealogy">www.nara.gov/genealogy</A> for ordering information. For state censuses contact the New Jersey State Archives, 185 W. State St., PO Box 307, Trenton, NJ 08625. ---Robin www.rootsweb.com/~njunion

I am seeking help. My gggrandfather, Ernst Heller, married his first wife abt. 1889-1890. I do not know her name. She died soon after but had a child, Jennie. How can I find out her name and date of their marriage? I have recently found out there was not an 1890 Union County Census. Ernst married Anne Bennet again in 1891, but I have all that info. Would someone be able to lookup the ECKART or ECKHART family of Jane and Charles in the Elizabeth, NJ area in the 1895 NJ census? They may be listed with children from Janes first marriage: George, Samuel, James and Jane FERGUSON. Thanks much in advance Marian Ferguson Mallory
The best census is 1900. Did he join the military at any time? Did you check the state census'? Did he leave a will? Any info in his obit? Was he included in the direct lists from Germany, or even the indirect lists? By the way I have one ggf who also fits into this category. I have taken all the usual steps including getting a copy of his Naturalization application and final papers but it only lists Germany as his place of origin! This is the last piece of my puzzle and I would appreciate any guidance that someone might have. By the way I reviewed all of the ship records from 1881, 1882 and 1883, that I could obtain with no results, other than I have had to have my prescription eye glasses upgraded!
