There is no Hillside Cemetery in Hillside. There is a Hillside Cemetery in Plainfield, on the Scotch Plains border. Evergreen Cemetery is in Hillside. Both are large private cemeteries with no online burial listings. Following the Civil War, there was a period of prosperity throughout the Northern states (and poverty in the South). The City of Elizabeth grew rapidly, adding many new streets and housing developments. In 1873, because of unsound business practices, the bubble burst. The National State Bank of Elizabeth, discovered that many of their loans were uncollectable. There was a "run on the bank", decreasing total deposits by 25%. Other banks, also in trouble, demanded that National State repay them money owed them by the bank. The bank reorganized in October 1873 with a new board of directors. In 1874, they issued 6000 shares of new stock, which allowed the bank to resume normal business. The City government, however, could not collect sufficient taxes to cover the municipal debt, and finally declared bankruptcy in 1876. Judgments against the City were not settled until 1922. I have more on this subject, including names. E-mail me at KQ4WR@aol.com if interested.
Apparently the Klez is everywhere. As I found out today you don't even need attachments to receive the virus. My Norton antivirus picked up several today. I had avoided opening any attachments with a stange subject line, but earliet this week I had 81 Klez and some other viruses in my computer and over 30 corrupted files. I couldn't operate. My Command antivirus didn't do the job. I just bought Norton, It's Great, I'm finally clean. ----- Original Message ----- From: To: NJUNION-L@rootsweb.com Sent: 5/18/02 3:40:37 PM Subject: [NJUnion] Klez Virus I suspect somebody on this list has the Klez virus on his or her computer. TOMBSTONE RECORDING DAY – WOODLAND CEMETERY – NEWARK, NJ Sunday, June 2 – 9:30 a.m. For those old friends, it's that time of year again... and for new people who have never had the opportunity, this is your chance to go to Woodland Cemetery in Newark, NJ, to visit your family gravesites in the security of a group, or for those out of state, to have someone help with pictures and tombstone inscriptions of your family gravesite. Each year we ask the Newark Police and/or Sheriff's Dept. to provide on-site protection for us. They nearly always supply an all-day car on-site to watch over us - although with a large group we find we are pretty safe. For everyone who can attend, we ask that you allow time to help record tombstone inscriptions. Some of you have been the beneficiary of these volunteer tombstone inscription days, and others of you are just all around good guys for helping "give back" to all of those people who have done research and shared their results with you. Please invite your friends to come (adults only please) and help us too. We'll pair you up with someone, so please come even if you are by yourself. The day is Sunday, June 2nd at 9:30 a.m. at the front gate (on South 10th), with a rain date of Sunday, June 9th, again at 9:30 a.m. If both days are raining, a new date will be set at a later time. If there is a question on the weather, anyone may call in the morning between 8:00-9:00 at 973-667-0450 to find out if we're still "on". The gate entrance for Woodland Cemetery is located at 670 South 10th Street between Springfield and Avon Avenues, Newark, NJ. Directions - take the Garden State Parkway to the Springfield Ave. Irvington Exit #143. Take Springfield Ave East till you see the cross street - South 10th. Make a right onto South 10th St. Anyone who will be coming to search their own family sites and needs help in locating those sites, please e-mail me and let me know what site you will be looking for, so that I can prepare ahead of time in order to guide you. Anyone who can't make it, but had wanted to look for tombstones at your family gravesite, please make arrangements with me ahead of time and we will do our best to record inscriptions and take pictures of your site for you, time permitting. To everyone - please let me know if you think you will be attending so we can keep an eye out for you. For the new people, here are a few suggestions if you are planning on donating some time to help us record tombstone inscriptions: Wear long pants, a short sleeved shirt, with a long sleeved shirt/sweatshirt over it (in case it gets warm). Wear socks and either sturdy sneakers or hiking shoes of some sort. Bug spray is a good idea. Perfume and hair spray are NOT good ideas. If you will be spending a few hours with us, bring some cold bottled water or soda - you will get thirsty. Please bring: * pencils/pens - we'll supply the paper * clip board (if you have one, if not, we are trying our best to have lots available) * cheap camera (it helps to look through a camera lens to decipher a tombstone inscription) * sunglasses (sometimes easier to see the inscription) * small garden tool(s) to pull back weeds from tombstone; * wide sidewalk chalk, (to rub difficult inscriptions...again, I'll bring some, but if you're in K-Mart or WalMart, it would help) * a plastic bucket to put all your "stuff" in - the tools, camera, chalk, camera, etc. - it makes it easier for you to carry everything from tombstone to tombstone. * some bring a towel or kneeling cushion since some tombstones only show a couple of inches above the ground... Any questions, just e-mail either John or me.... addresses below. PLEASE SEND A REPLY E-MAIL IF YOU ARE PLANNING ON ATTENDING. Don't forget to sign your e-mail - name and city/state. Thanks. I am trying to get the DC for Alexander Bennet who died in the Blizzard of 1888. It was believed he died in Staten Island, I tried Vital Statistics but no luck. Then I found him in the 1880 Manhattan Census, so I tried there - no luck. It is very possible that he died in Elizabeth, NJ because he worked at the Singer Plant. I don't know the exact date of death only the year. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how I can find him so I can order a DC. As you are probably aware, you must know the exact date of death in order to request a DC from NJ. Is there a website that I can request a look-up of some kind? I don't know where to find him. Any help is greatly, greatly appreciated. Margaret/Colorado mb329@msn.comGet more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com

Does anyone know for sure what Catholic Churches existed in Rahway, NJ in the late 1800's that would have served a German Family. I.e. like St. Michael's RC church in Elizabeth was mostly German. Regards Wm. Meier Researching: Bernhard, Hofmeister, Schauble, Meier from Union Co., NJ.
I am looking for my gggrandfather in the 1860 census. His name was Ludwig Nees and he came from Baden, Germany (not sure when). My ggrandfather was John L Nees born in 1854 in NJ. I searched the 1860 census on Ancestry and went through each ED to no avail. Does anyone have access to an index or a directory for a look-up for Ludwig Nees. I am not positive that they lived in Union County but they lived there for most of their lives. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Dian in Florida

Marriages were supposed to be reported to the county beginning in 1795. However, a lot of marriages were not reported. The early marriages for Essex Co. were published in the GMNJ beginning in Vol. 9 (1933). I don't see these Dunns among those.
