Hi, Today the family search site posted the 1880 US Census and the 1881 British Census on their site....enjoy! Pat M NJ http://www.familysearch.org/
I am looking for information on Edward BALDWIN, born abt 1840 location unk, died 19 Apr 1914 in Elizabeth, NJ. Baldwin probably lived in NYC in Dec 1861 when he enlisted in the 13th NY Independent Battery, Light Artillery as a private. By the time the unit was decommissioned in July 1865, he had risen to the rank of Lieutenant. Sometime after the war he moved to Elizabeth and in 1896 was living at 720 Pearl St. Baldwin served as the secretary for the 13th Independent Battery's Veterans Association. There is some evidence that upon his death he left behind memoirs and letters relating to his war experiences. I am trying to determine what local repositories, historical societies, etc might have received the Baldwin papers. Any and all suggestions are welcome. Also, if anyone has this Baldwin in their family history, I have information to share with you. Thanks in advance, John Clavin jc@austin.rr.com
Trish, Would you mind telling all where you send for the obits and the cost? Do you have to have the exact date, etc? Would help a lot of genies. Regards, Grace
I recently received my gg grandparents obits from the Elizabeth Daily Journal one from July 18,1955 and one from May 5,1960, and with each came some *extra* obits, as the person copied the page.If you had an ancestor die on these dates please email me and I will check. Trisha in Buffalo

Hi, I am looking for information on Marietta BEAM b 1837 in PA and died 1916 in NJ. She married Sylvester MYERS in 1859. Sylvester was b in 1833 and d 1885. I do not know where, but think it was PA. They had 7 children. Died possibly in Elizabeth, Union Co., NJ. I do not know anything about Marietta's parents and very little about her children. The information of the above dates was from family Bible. Elizabeth Myers
Does anyone have a copy of the following book? Summit, New Jersey >From Poverty Hill to The Hill City Edmund B. Raftis Great Swamp Press - Seattle - 1996 If so, and if it has an index, would you be willing to look for any reference to the Gray family (Dr. William Kelly Gray and his sons, resident in Summit around 1870-1874, and perhaps later)? I would be most grateful for any help with this family! Hi Everyone I found this on another site and felt that it was important enough to send on: This is one most used Genealogy Libraries and many of us plan trips to research there. Please pass this information on so that everyone will be aware of this. Regards Pat R Closing Date Announcement Genealogy Department of the Allen County Public Library, Fort Wayne, Indiana - -------------------------------------- The Historical Genealogy Department of the Allen County Public Library will close for relocation on Saturday, December 14, 2002 at 6pm. The department will remain closed through the month of January 2003. This is to allow time to move all our materials to our interim location. The current building will be going through renovation and expansion. ------------------------------- Will materials be available? ------------------------------- All our research materials will be available up until Saturday, December 14 at 6pm. At that time the department will be closed so we can move all our materials to our interim location. When the library opens at that location, we will have all our books, microforms and periodicals ready for research. ------------------------------ Why will we be closed? ----------------------------- Closing the department will allow us to move the whole collection at once instead of doing it piecemeal. This will ensure that the materials you are coming to Fort Wayne to use for your research will be available when you arrive, offering the full collection for our researchers. If we moved pockets of materials, what you needed for your research might not be available. By moving the whole collection at once it will ensure that the materials you are interested in will be available until we close on December 14th, and when we reopen in late January 2003. ---------------------------------------- Where will the interim location be? ---------------------------------------- The interim location of the Allen County Public Library will be at 200 East Berry St., Fort Wayne, Indiana. Locally, it is called Renaissance Square. It is 5 blocks to the east from the current library. There will be limited free parking available; there is also a pay parking garage across the street and more than 150 metered spaces in close proximity. ---------------------------------------- What will the interim location be like? --------------------------------------- One of the most exciting things about our interim location is that the genealogy collection will be a browsing collection. All the materials will be out and available for the researcher to retrieve them. Materials will not have to be paged; the shelves will be open. ---------------------------- How long will we be in the interim location? -------------------------- The projected time frame is 2-3 years. ------------------------- How can I find out more information? ------------------------- Visiting the library web site http://www.acpl.lib.in.us or phoning the department at 260-421-1225 is the best way to get current relocation information. This is a very exciting time for all of us, librarians and researchers alike. Our goal is to keep our patrons informed and continue to offer the highest level of customer service possible now, in our interim location, and in our newly renovated library. For further contact, please phone the department or email Curt Witcher, Manager, Historical Genealogy Department-ACPL at cwitcher@acpl.lib.in.us or Susan Kaufman Tavenner, Librarian, Historical Genealogy Department-ACPL at skaufman@acpl.lib.in.us
<PRE>The towns do posess the complete record, and some Registrars are more helpful than others. I was able to get several birth and death certificates free, since I did not need them to be certified. If possible, sometimes it is better to make a phone call and explain what you are looking for. There is also the issue of time period, as certain information cannot be released to distant (not that person) relatives until after a specific time period. Elizabeth

Does anyone have access to 1870 to 1875 Elizabeth, NJ directories. I am looking for George High and Frederick High. George High was a butcher in elizabeth, NJ. I would appreciate any help. Thanks, Dian
Yes -- the towns issue the "short form" certificate, which is a half-page sized form with minimal information. I have gotten some towns to add the parents' name on request. They had to type it on the bottom, 'cause there's no place on the form for that information. The certificates issued by the state are the complete record. But those are next to impossible to get for the past several decades under their current rules. Gary ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! <PRE>I used to work for the state, and checking birth records was part of my job. Local registrars only provide the name of the child, date and place of birth. For a complete certificate, you must write to the BVS in Trenton. If parents are unmarried, the father must sign an affidavit of paternity in order for the child to have his last name, and for his own name to appear on the certificate. It also possible to have changes made after the original is filed.
Tony, I think I can answer this. I was born in Summit in Overlook Hospital. When I applied for a driver's license I went to the Summit Board of Health to get a raised seal birth certificate which was given to me after an hour wait. All it stated was my name, birthdate and place of birth, on official paper with a very beautiful gold raised seal. It met the requirements for my driver's license application. Of course I know who my parents are. You can get a birth certificate with all the information on it from the NJ Dept of Health in Trenton and you are applying for yourself or a deceased parent. You have to have the exact day of birth now, and not just the year. Perhaps Summit has that information also and you have to be more specific with your request. Tony, I could be wrong, but I believe it was due to the fact that many parents were not married starting in those years, and to save the dignity of the child, this was done. I sent for my birth cert. to Trenton, because the Town one (Elizabeth), was so blah, and I wanted to see if I could dig up some more info..you know, the curiosity of a genie. One of the boxes that HAD to be checked was Legitimate? yes or no. Times have changed..but then, some still don't show the father's name, I would bet. The ones from Trenton have more info..at least they used to..If like California. that can change.. Regards, Grace
New Jersey Birth Certificate issued in Summit 1960 does not give names of Parents. There must be a story behind that unfortunate omission? Anybody know why? Tony
Just joined list. I am looking for descendants of my James H. Carroll, Jr. m. to Margaret Looby. James was b. 1922 in Rock Hill, SC and died in April 1985, according to the SSDI he died in Westfield, Union County, NJ. I did check the Union County site and was hoping to find a volunteer who could look up the obit for April 1985 for James CARROLL. James was a cousin to me and I have lots of info on his father and Carroll grandparents, etc. going back to abt 1812 in SC. Any help appreciated Thank you Diane in WI
I'm looking for info on the Smiths who lived in Rahway but were originally from Fraserburgh, Scotland. James Smith (b. abt 1889) and his wife Jeannie (b. abt 1882) immigrated around 1909/11. He traveled several times to the UK as a manager for a cooperage firm, R. Hamilton Inc(?). They lived at 218 W Milton Ave (1919), 215 Elm Ave (1920/22), 361 Hamilton St (1920)---all Rahway. I don't know if they had kids, but I have school photos of Marion Smith and Robert Smith for 1934-35. In 1920, James' father and family came to USA: James Smith (b. 1863), wife Margaret (Prahm) Smith (b. 1864), daughter Jemima (b. abt 1900), and son Alexander (b. abt 1902). Margaret Prahm Smith was still alive in 1936 when her sister, Rachel Prahm Dunn, died but I don't know anything about the rest of the family. Any help appreciated. ---Robin Mason Bedford, MA
