    3. I just received a very kind e-mail from a reference librarian in New Brunswick , CANADA. In it she says that there were 2 jouets from NJ, one probably from Elizabeth in the 18th century who wandered up to New Brunswick. Both were Loyalists during the American Revolution. Both Xenophon and John Jouet were members of the NJ Volunteers and later settled in Kingsclear Parish, NB. Xenophon's father was Cavalier Jouet who went to England due to the American Revolution. If anyone has info on either of these Jouet's I would appreciate hearing from you. Kathy

LOELOFF b 12/27/1912 d 3/1996 last residence Linden Does anyone know this family? There are not an awful lot of LOELOFFs and my LOELOFF family came from Germany about 1847 arriving in St Louis. They moved to San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas around 1882. The German name was LÖLOFF but the family that moved to Texas anglicized it to LOELOFF. Another brother came to Minnesota and they simply droped the unlaut making the name LOLOFF. I am wondering if the NJ family LOELOFFs are a branch of the LÖLOFF family. Floreda

    3. Hi Mike, I don't have a list of the members, but the information I do have will help you get one. The gravestones for the Scotch Plains Baptist Church Yard were published in the GMNJ vol. 35, no. 2 pp 62-69, Vol. 35, no. 3, pp. 130-137; Vol. 36, no. 1, pp. 29-38; Vol. 36, no. 2, pp. 86-96. The introductory paragraph reads: "The Scotch Plains Baptist Church was organized August 5, 1747, by fifteen members from Piscataway Baptist Church at Edison (Stelton), Middlesex County. A building had been erected in 1742, which was enlarged in 1759. The first pastor was the Rev. Benjamin Miller, who served from February 13, 1748, until his death on November 14, 1781. He was suceeded in 1785 by the Rev. William Van Horne. The church, whith it's adjoining burial ground, is located on the southeast corner of Mountin and Park avenues in Scotch Plains. These inscriptions were first copied in 1922 by members of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, and subsequently supplemented by them on November 4, 1952. The early brownstones in the graveyard are in poor condition. Many in brackets were either missing or illegible in 1952. An unusual number of later stones omit the age, and some have no dates whatsoever. Family researchers are also referred to "Scotch Plains Baptist Church Members, 1747-1814," published in the January 1932 issue of this magazine (Vol. 7, no. 3), and to "Scothc Plains Baptist Church Marriage Records, 1758-1761," printed in the New Jersey Archives (First Seried, Vol. 22). The original church records have been microfilmed by Rutgers University Library." I'm sure you can get a copy of the articles referenced through Inter-library loan. Audrey Shields Hancock has lots of information from this cemetery, along with additional sources of information, on her website at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~grannyapple/NJCh-Cem/UnionCoNJSctchPlns/ScotchPlainsBptHOME.html . 3. Hello, Yes, I have only some of the people on my site. I don't have all the copies from the issues given below for all the names. When I have a chance to get copies of all pages from GMNJ and as I have time, I will hopefully get more names added. I live in Michigan and don't have access to all GMNJ articles. I am also trying to be careful of copyrights on other published information. If someone is inclined to transcribe the names from the below listings, I would be happy to add those names to my website. 1. Re: [NJUnion] Re: Original Land Purchase Map
    2. Mike Miller
    3. Gary, Thanks for the leads. On Schedule 3, it was in the History of Somerset Co. book and is listed online at the Somerset County site. http://www.rootsweb.com/~njsomers/landpurch.htm They have a map of early Somerset county with lot numbers and a list of land owners listed by number. The number list is not complete and nor is the map. This matches with your explanation below. So from what I am reading this legal action was due to someone kyping the record books, eh? Some things never change. ;>) So this seems to explain the uncertainity of land ownership in the following quote. He was buying a settlement to the land dispute. "Apparently "the Widow Miller" held by Elizabethtown right and sold her claim to Luke Covert in about 1740. In 1745 Covert purchased a Proprietary title from Drummond and Alexander, successors to Sir Evan Cameron, to the land southwest of the Vermeules, reaching from Clinton avenue to a little beyond Rock avenue." From History of Union Co. by Van Doren so if I am searching for information on "Widow Miller" who according to Van Doren may have been the Widow of Andrew Miller. I found an Andrew Miller deported from Scotland to New York around the Killing Times there so I wonder if they are the same. I need to write the NJ Historical Society then. Do you know when was the "Answer" filed? Mike Miller On Wednesday 12 March 2003 16:58, garymaher@juno.com wrote: > I don't think it's been reprinted. 2. I don't think it's been reprinted. The NJ State Archives has a copy that is actually a photocopy, so they probably wouldn't mind making copies of it for you. The NJ Historical Society probably has at least a couple of copies. The NJ Historical Society also has copies of the Answer filed by the Elizabethtown Associates, including one copy with extensive annotations that appear to have been written by one of the attorneys involved in the litigation. The Answer is signed by something like 600 residents of Elizabeth claiming property rights under the Associates. It's a good census substitute. I don't think the list has been published anywhere. As far as I know, neither document contains a map of the entire layout of lots, just a couple of small sections. The Bill was produced by the Proprietors, so it does show their property claims, but the Associates ended up with the property by default after the Revolution. 3. I've "rescued" two lovely portrait photographs of Mr. & Mrs. BEEBE of Elizabeth, New Jersey which was taken there in 1875. On the back of Mr. BEEBE's photograph it notes that he was born in 1832. On the back of Mrs. BEEBE's photo it lists her name as Carrie E. BEEBE born 1836 and died September 10th, 1898. It also notes that Mrs. BEEBE is buried in the Evergreen Cemetery, but doesn't reference a city or town that it is located in. These are lovely old portrait photographs which belong with family. If you are a member of this family or know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
