    1. [NJUNION] Swain, Swaine, Swayne
    2. Hi to Dave in Paris (France, not Texas): I don't think I have much for you. But I have some interest in Swains partly because one of my cousins, Joseph O. Ogden (1833-1918), married Esther A. Swain, AFN:12KM-F10, b. 23 Oct 1836, Elizabeth, Union, NJ, d. 1915, Milwaukee, WI. I suspect she was a daughter of James Albert Swain, who the LDS-IGI says was christened at the Presbyterian Church at Westfield, Union, NJ, on 13 Apr 1815. Before serving in the Civil War, James was a business partner (dry goods) of one of my ancestors in Milwaukee in the 1850s. I see that the LDS-IGI states that Bryant Swain's son Richard Swain was christened at the First Pres. Church at Morristown, Morris, NJ, on 21 Dec 1803. The IGI also says that another Richard "Swane" married Nancy Cory on 29 Apr 1790 in New Providence, Union, NJ. I believe that modern Summit, NJ, was created in 1869 out of chunks of New Providence and Springfield townships. I also have a note that there is (or was) a Swain House, built ca. 1744, at 231 S. Springfield Ave. in Springfield, NJ What I mainly wanted to say here is that possibly all of the above Swains are descendants of William Swain (or Swayne), AFN:PC89-RH, who was born in England ca. 1585, sailed to Boston in 1635 on the "Elizabeth & Anne," and died in Branford, CT, ca. 1664. Among other activities, he was a judge in MA, 1637-1640, and served as Deputy Governor of CT in 1644. One of William's children was Capt. Samuel Swain, who moved from Branford?, New Haven, CT, to Newark, Essex, NJ, ca. 1665 and died at Newark in the 1680s. One reason for much LDS Ancestral File interest in Samuel may be that famous inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931), AFN:1D47-XFQ, seems to be one of his descendants. Edison's AF pedigree appears to be mostly accurate. John (in Chicago) ===================================== In a message dated 01/07/2000, Dave at [email protected] writes: <<Richard Swain of Morris or Essex County, N.J., is reported to be the artilleryman, or keeper, of the "Old Sow," a cannon of the colonial forces during the Revolutionary War, and to have had a grandson also named Richard Swain, who lived in Summit in Union County, N.J. Does anyone know more about Richard Swain, his ancestors or descendants? Any information greatly appeciated. Dave McMane. Paris, France>>

    1. [NJUNION] Royal Lines -- a true story
    2. Harman Clark
    3. If you want to see a good example, see the Automated Archives, Inc., GRS CD#102, (which was a DOS version, no longer produced). It was entitled "Automated Family Pedigrees #3". If you have that CD, start with "Gov." Thomas Roberts and keep going back. The pedigree on that disk went to Adam -- yes, that's right, the Biblical Adam. For some reason, however, Eve was not mentioned. I am not kidding. I showed that to Mr. Whittaker, who was selling those CDs at the NEHGS conference in Boston in 1995. He didn't realize that was on it either, until he traced it himself. Subsequent editions, I am told, have removed that line. Merry Christmas to all. Harman

    3. Maybe we should look at it this way: Back in the days of John of Gaunt, the populus wasn't taught to read or write. Our lines can be traced partly because our ancestors were people who had the good fortune to be of families who could and did afford to educate their children, and we should keep in mind, humbly, that we had nothing to do with that! Be proud of your ancestry, it was a gift to you, but remember the line is only as good as what YOU do to improve it from here on out. Marj in NC

    2. Merry Christmas to you Harman, and I just have one comment since I had, at one time, had some of those Automated Archives Dos versions. If that #3 disk went back to Adam, then we all should have been included in that line!!! Joyce in Union Co.

    1. [NJUNION] Re:Supposed Royal Lines
    2. Harman Clark is right.... Someone sent me info that claimed my 8th g-grandfather's, Gov. Thomas Roberts, line descended through the royal line of King Edward IV and his mistress Elizabeth Wayle Lucy's daughter Elizabeth Plantagenet. Not only that, but the Robert's line was traced back to 1320. This same source claimed that Gov. Thomas Roberts wife, Rebecca Hilton's line also descended through the same royal line. That is when I started taking this royalty lineage stuff with a grain of salt. Thanks to Harman Clark I found out that Gov. Thomas Roberts parentage is unknown, and his wife Rebecca's last name is unknown. Alice Martin LaRue <<The "genealogies" of the mid 1800s to early 1900s are replete with these "royal descents". Some, like Schenck and Dunham, are fraudulent; others, like Wright, are just faulty or unproven lines, based on the pre-Jacobus genealogy that assume that people with similar surnames were somehow related. Some of these long-discredited lines are now being given new life on the Internet.>>

    1. Re: [NJUNION] Supposed Royal lines
    2. JQ & List, It sounds erroneous to be sure!!! It would be comforting to believe such a "blanket theory" (see message below), but REALLY!!!! I have faith that people have more sense than that! After all, much of today's population in this country came from "hearty stock" that would have never survived the colonization of this continent had they been as gullible as your "well known" historian suggests! However, for those who can "prove" their lineage back to Charlemagne, are you aware that Charlemagne's origins can be traced several generation back? I concur with you, however, that finding one's more 'peasant' ancestry in this country can be rather interesting. For certain it is equally as important and often times much more exciting! I, too, have been searching for my Union & Essex County ancestry - but to no avail! I am still searching for information on my great-great-grandparents: Jeremiah RYAN and Mary HURLEY (parents of James Alfred RYAN, b. 1869; m. 9/20/1882 at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church in Short Hills, NJ; d. Abt. 1900 Springfield, NJ); and Patrick CLARK and Bridget SULLIVAN (parents of Mary Elizabeth CLARK, b. 10/6/1870 in Branch Mills, NJ; m. James Alfred RYAN 9/20/1882 in Short Hills; d. 7/27/1938 in Summit, NJ). All I know about the Clarks is that they were Protestant. I simply haven't enough information to request B-M-D records on my great-great-grandparents. Do these names sounds familiar to anyone on the list? I would appreciate hearing from anyone who knows of these families. Happy holidays to you all. Pamela Rhett Molzan In a message dated 12/17/1999 2:05:52 AM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: << Maybe this is erroneous. But I once read somewhere that a well-known historian had calculated that anyone with even a tiny bit of European ancestry (this would include almost all of the black and white population of the USA) has virtually a zero chance of NOT being a descendant of CHARLEMAGNE, ca. 742-814 AD. Now that I feel fairly secure in my royal lineage via Charlemagne dating back to the last millennium, I want to focus on the much interesting business of identifying a few more of my mostly peasant ancestors of what is now Union Co., NJ. 3. If I may add an anecdote to this discussion, from my experience. I trace my ancestors back to 1700's in Fairfield, Conn. To my surprise (and Delight) a few months ago someone sent me a lineage going back to a Sir Thomas Staples, in Ireland and on back to France. Further research seems to reveal that there is no truth to the story. I recently wrote to the DAR for a copy of an application which was filed in 1900. Surprise, here was the story of Sir Thomas. Evidently everyone used this story for 100 years. Bill Staples, WE (Worker Emeritus) Researching Family History of HOLMES, STAPLES, ELMS, BANKS, WYGANT lines

    3. I note considerable discussion of purported descents from John of Gaunt. The "genealogies" of the mid 1800s to early 1900s are replete with these "royal descents". Some, like Schenck and Dunham, are fraudulent; others, like Wright, are just faulty or unproven lines, based on the pre-Jacobus genealogy that assume that people with similar surnames were somehow related. Some of these long-discredited lines are now being given new life on the Internet. (I recently visited a website with an elaborate ancestry of my immgrant ancestor George Squire -- whose parents have not even been established). May I respectfully suggest that anyone wishing to establish or verify a royal line, consult one of the modern authorities on the subject, such as David Faris or Walter Lee Sheppard, Jr. -- or even a popularized collection such as Gary Boyd Roberts' "The Royal Descents of 500 Immigrants" [Geneal. Pub. Co. 1993]. There are some documented "royal line" families in the N.J. area -- such as Fitz Randolph, and some of the Stansborough>James>Bulkeley amilies -- but most of what is circulating is not valid. I make no judgment on the Cadmus discussion -- just suggesting that one check thoroughly before assuming. Harman Clark [email protected]

    2. For those interested in the CADMUS family, there was an obituary in today's Star Ledger of Paul Cadmus, 94 from Weston, CT, a native of New York. He was an artist. It goes on to describe his style of his paintings. If anyone would like the full obituary, email me privately and I shall be happy to send it to you. Joyce in Union Co., N.J.
