    1. [NJUNION] Obadiah Bruen + Charlemagne
    2. In a message dated 01/15/2000, [email protected] (Sherri Cann) wrote to [email protected]: <<my Great Grandfather was a direct descendant of Obadiah Bruen (b: 12/25/1606 in Cheshire County England, d: after 1680 in Newark) who was one of the original founders of Newark (New Ark) in 1666.......Hope I can share info with someone. Sherri Cann.>> ======================================= Hi to Sherri et al. Because we have several Bruen relatives (mostly tied to Morris Co. and Union Co., NJ), my brother recently referred me to this BRUEN website: <<http://www.rootsweb.com/~genepool/bruen.htm>. Our Bruen kin seem to be mostly descendants of David Bruen (ca. 1715-1824), born at Newark, Essex Co. Son of Joseph Bruen?, David later moved to Morris Co., and is buried at Hillside Cemetery at Madison, Morris, NJ. I've only taken a quick look at this attractive Bruen website. But I suspect it should be approached with a few grains of salt, because it starts out with usual the royal stuff that can be rather difficult to verify. The site begins by tracing Obadiah Bruen (born 1606) back through a series of begats to Charles Le Debonnaire & his ubiquitous dad Charlemagne (born 742) and ends up with Pepin The Old (born 560). Mercifully the begats between old Pepin and Adam & his consort Eve are skipped. Charlemagne & his offspring really seem to have gotten around a bit-- even in the pre-Viagra first millennium. 1. [NJUNION] Richard Swain
    2. Aralynn McMane
    3. Many thanks to all who responded about Richard Swain, the reported gun master of the "Old Sow." Following is a bit of published information, as well as federal census findings concerning a few of Swain's descendants: Edmund B. Raftis ('"Summit, New Jersey, From Poverty Hill to the Hill City," Great Swamp Press, Seattle, 1996) writes in his excellent, well-sourced history of Summit, on page 31, that William P. Tuttle of Madison recalled in 1896 meeting a Richard Swain who was "over 85" in a house atop Beacon Hill in Summit in 1855 and that Swain said he know all about the cannon of the Colonial forces, having lived all his life in the locality and "been a boy" during the Revolution. Raftis goes on to write that "Richard Swain senior" was gun master of the Old Sow and "lighted the signal beacon. It may have been that he lived right there'' atop Beacon Hill. It appears that the above refers to two different Richard Swains -- the "senior" perhaps suggesting that their relationship was father and son. On page 149 of the above book Raftis writes that Richard Swain the cannon master "owned a farm on the east side of Hobart Avenue where the Reeves-Reed Arboretum is now'' [and] "died shortly after 1832. His grandson, Job Swain, and his wife Experience lived on the large farm for 60 years, between about 1828 and 1888. It was known as "Buck Hills." Five of their six sons served in the Civil War." ********** The 1860 federal census of Union County, N.J., Springfield township, page 698, shows: Job Swain 57 Farm Labor 1500 2000 New Jersey Experience 49 " Richard 10 " Job 14 " John 17 " Mary King 19 " Lydia(?) A. 2 " Nancy 4/12 " Julia Francis 2 " This appears to be Job Swain, grandson of Richard Swain the gunmaster, to whom Raftis refers. *********** The 1850 federal census of Essex Co., Springfield Township, page 262, shows: Job Swain 46 Farmer Deevy 32 George 18 Betsy 15 Moses 13 Nancy 14 John 8 Job 4 Daniel 2 Enumerated with them are: William Swain 21 Farmer Bridget his w. 19 William Swain's wife was Margaret Duffy, daughter of John and perhaps Margaret Duffy, also of Springfield township. Census records show Irish birth for all three. Testimony of neighbors of Job and Experience Swain, in William Swain's Civil War pension records, suggests that William Swain's father, Job, was remarried, probably a few years after 1830. William Swain's pension records list his children, some of the great-great grandchildren of Richard Swain the cannon master. If anyone would care to know more about William and Bridget Swain, including names and birth years of their children, or if anyone has additional infomation concerning Richard Swain's ancestors or descendants, please e-mail me, [email protected] I will be happy to share. 2. I'm new to cyberspace, and a few days ago I noticed this 1998 query at <http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/NJ/Essex?>: RE family bible of OBADIAH WOODRUFF, born 1768 at Elizabeth, NJ, posted by Bonnie (in SW Virginia) at [email protected] [still correct]. Bonnie writes: <<Recently, I had access to the above-referenced original family bible memorializing the Obadiah Woodruff family....I would be happy to share this information.>>. I haven't yet seen Bonnie's info, but Obadiah (b. 1768) appears to be a brother of my ancestor Zurviah Woodruff (b. 1766), both children of Seth Woodruff (1742-1814) of Elizabeth, NJ. Bonnie apparently has no NJ ancestors and, to help her make some sense of the family data inscribed in this bible, I printed out the following list, which I duplicate here in abridged form. Because this list deals mostly with the 18th century, I decided it might have some general interest to Union Co., NJ, researchers. I would very much welcome additions & corrections. Most of the stuff below is from some pages I copied from Ceylon N. Woodruff's WOODRUFF CHRONICLES, vol. 2 (1971), starting on page 11. "AFN" refers to Ancestral File Numbers, and typing in these AFNs only (omitting names) speeds up access to LDS Church AF records at <http://www.familysearch.org/Search/searchaf.asp>. John Q. You may also be able to get the Newark Evening News, Newark Star Ledger, and Elizabeth Daily Journal on Microfilm from your local library on "Inter-Library-Loan" or ILL via the State Library of NJ. Check with them too. If I make plans for Rutgers again I will let you know. Do you have exact names, addresses and dates? I hope I helped. 3. Hi Lois, Where are you located? I've personally researched the Newark Evening News and Star Ledger at the Alexander Library in East Brunswick, NJ. They are on campus at Rutgers University. They seemed to have every year that I've needed in the 30s and 40s. They have almost all NJ/NY newspapers on film, plus many others from around the country. They don't do lookups so you would have to go there yourself. I was there in December before Christmas. Very nice facility. Hope this helps. 3. Hi there! I am trying to find SKS from the Plainfield, Union, New Jersey area to find information on my great-grand aunt Lillian NISSEL (nee ZIEGLER). She was living in Plainfield, Union, NJ in 1969 when her sister (my great-grandmother) passed away. I hope someone can help me find this elusive family member. I believe that they may have had children, but am honestly not sure. Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you. Take care. Scott dePass Hamilton, Ontario CANADA [email protected]

    3. Lois, Elizabeth Public Library was a great help in locating obits. My grandfather died in Newark 1922 and the Eliz Library found a copy of the obit for me. 2. It's wonderful how long some people will save newspaper clippings. Ask enough of the right poeple, and you may well find one who has saved the very obits you need! But try other newspapers, also. The Elizabeth Daily Journal and Newark Star Ledger come to mind. Obits are often run in more than one paper. I even found obits of some of my Union County relatives in the New Your Times.

    2. Greetings!! I am in need of some obituaries which were listed in the Newark Evening News according to the funeral homes who provided them. I requested them via interlibrary loan from Morristown and Newark public libraries. Morristown only had the News from 1883-1925 and the answer I got from Newark is as follows: "The News index indicates obituaries in an edition that was not filmed and is not available. There are very brief death notices only." Does anyone know where I can find the obituaries? It sounds like I need the actual newspapers and I don't know where to go from here. Any ideas?!? Thanks in advance for any leads anyone can give me. Lois
