    1. [NJUNION] Re: Elizabethtown NJ
    2. Elizabethtown is the old name for Elizabeth, which was in Essex County until about 1851, when Union County was formed. Hope this helps.

One of their daughters was a nurse who graduated from Elizabeth General Hosp. abt 1932to 1935. She did private duty nursing in Flushing New York and died abt 1936 or 1937. Was buried in Elizabeth. Also seeking info on "Marancik" Surname and the origin which I think is Slavic. Any help would be appreciated as Joseph and Mary were my grandparents. Judy Nash Rollins, Jacksonville Fl.

    3. Any advice greatly appreciated. Thank you. My "impossible-to-pin downs" are great-great grandparents, John and Catherine (Clark) "McMen," born respectively in Ireland and (perhaps) Massachusetts. Nothing is known of their extended families. Between them and their children, there are nine different spellings of the McM... surname, which eventually stabilized as McMane when their descendants lived in Summit. Pre-1850 (apparently as early as 1839) it is reported that they resided in New York City. No family in the 1840 census of New York fits the profile or even comes close to doing so. From 1850 to 1872, John and/or Catherine lived variously in Madison (Morris County), Springfield (Essex County -- apparently at the site of what later was Summit in Union) and Millburn (in Essex County.) John apparently died before 1860, but no record of his death can be found in local registers or in the state archives. Cemetery searches also were unsuccessful. There is some evidence in federal records pertaining to her son's Civil War service that Catherine may have been living as late as 1883, although the federal census of Morris-Essex-Union 1880 does not show her. The only church record located, of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Millburn, shows her and two children having joined the church in 1868, but she does not appear on the list of communicants, so may not have remained a member. The last record of her is 1872 and seems to place her in Millburn, where she also was in 1870. No death record can be found and cemetery searches have proved unsuccessful. Baffled in Paris -- Dave McMane

The 1880 Soundex only listed families with children under 10 years of age, so if Henry was the youngest child born in 1865, the family would not be in the 1880 Soundex. 1. Re: [NJUNION] Naturalization Papers
    2. There is also a great site on the internet where you can find information about naturalization (section 8) http://home.att.net/~arnielang/shipgide.html [email protected] l.com To: [email protected] cc: 02/24/00 Subject: Re: [NJUNION] Naturalization 02:17 PM Papers Please respond to NJUNION-L Garda, I you go to the site: www.nara.gov/ you will see that in 1906 the naturalizations were filed in DC in the NARA (National Archives). Before that, they were held in local district courts. I believe I read that earlier (much earlier then yours), is in the Archives in Trenton. So if anyone came over 1906 and after, the papers should be in DC. Go to the site and it will tell you how to get them. Good luck! Grace O'Kane PS..do you know where they lived in Elizabeth? Also..suggest that you get 1910 census..not indexed, but Union County is about the 3rd last roll..if I remember right..Also the 1920 census is indexed.. the 1920 one would show year naturalized. I used them to find out..that and getting church records from the parish. My parish is gone now (Holy Rosary), and found out that Sacred Heart has the records, but the Archdiocese of Newark should have them too. Also at the NARA site I mentioned, you could get forms for military service..which many emigrants did to get their citizenship.

Also I went to school in the 1940s with a "Shotwell" from the nearby area. Good luck with your searches. 1. Re: [NJUNION] Thompson, Jaggers, Terrel
    2. Margaret, Elizabethtown is now Elizabeth, NJ. In NJ(can't seak for other states), what was at the end of the name of the town, i.e. "town," depended on the population. When a town reached a certain population it evolved from town to township to status of city. Thus Elizabeth is now, "The City, of Elizabeth, in Union County." Gosh..after all those eons, I remember what I was taught in school. LOL. In the 1700s, there is written history. Sugesst you contact Westfield library. Heard that Elizabeth no longer has a Historical Society. There are some Elizabeth sites. Do you know the religion? Were they in Amer. Rev? Have also heard that Rutgers has a collection of earlier records. Grace O'Kane

    2. Thanks Jan for the help on the counties. I was wondering why people were writing about Elizabeth in NJUNION when I had Elizabethtown in Essex! However my Thompsons were in Ohio (Jersey, of course - Licking county) by the 1830's. Does the book on Passaic Valley cover the period of 1660-1700? If so, I'll certainly try to find a copy. Happy hunting and thanks again, Margaret

    1. [NJUNION] John Adams/Margaret McGiven
    2. My head was so sore from banging the brick wall that I sort of eased off for a while, but here goes again! In the 1870 Union Co. census, Scotch Plains, I found what I believe is my husband's grandparents. He knew his father was born in New Jersey, but that was all he knew of the family. The DC shows the grfather John Adams and grmother Margaret McGiven. In 1870 John was 54 years old, Margaret 42 with a son John, age 17 and son Henry age 5. Henry would be my husband's father and I was able to get a birth record from the state on his birth and parents. According to this census John Sr. was born in Switzerland and Margaret in Ireland. I did not find them in the 1880 census. Occupation was farmer. I would like to know where John and Margaret are buried and if the son John has any family still living. Have contacted several churches, cemeteries and the Scotch Plains library with no success. I believe they were Catholic, but the church there will not provide any information. My husband said he remembered his father writing to a brother John when my husband was small...this would have been in the 1920's. My husband's father came to Alabama, probably after he was grown and possibly parents had died. With no death date the NJ search for a DC seems to be rather expensive so I have not tried that yet. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Rose Dennis Adams
