    2. Hi Bruce: Thanks again for the Broad St. Elizabeth, and did not notice the Elizabeth Public Park, 1907 on your list, which I would be interested in. Do you think this is Warnaco Park?? Thank you! Pat [email protected]

    1. [NJUNION] Joanna E. Briggs, NY>NJ 1830-1889
    2. Bruce Cardner
    3. I have had no luck in finding the parents of Joanna Elizabeth Briggs, b. 1830, unknown, and died June 15, 1889 in Plainfield, NJ. >From the SDB records; " On Saturday, June 15, at the residence of her son, Plainfield, NJ, Joanna E. Cardner died, wife of Dr. Iretus Greene Cardner, NY, and foster-daughter of the late Thomas B. and Susannah Stillman of NY and Plainfield." She was buried in the Seventh Day Baptist Cemetery and later moved to Hillside Cemetery in Plainfield, NJ on July 20, 1903. >From the NY City Directory, 1890: Cardner, J. E. drugs, 584 Grand, h. 221 E. 58th. Dr. Iretus G. Cardner two addresses, 221 E. 58th, 69 W. 105th St. NY. I can not figure out the way the J. E. Cardner is listed as to drugs with a separate address given. Could she have had a drugstore?? Does anyone have ideas on this? I believe Joanna was related to the Stillmans in some way. I believe her Briggs line was SDB, and the Stillmans were also. I find myself wondering if she had brothers and sisters. Also when did her parents die, and why the Stillmans as foster parents. The Stillmans had no children of their own. The SDB Historical Society has an autograph book that belonged to Joanna when she attended Deruyter Academy in 1849. Also there were some tintypes in hinged frames, probably her family. We can not get to Wisconsin to get copies of these, but I may have to hire someone eventually. The pictures could have been the Stillmans or the Briggs. How would we ever know now? Joanna Elizabeth Briggs Cardner is a puzzle. Hoping some other Briggs born about that time might have some clues. Sydney Cardner

    2. To RUTH (plus NJUNion list): many thanks for confirming your receipt of my e-mail resend of Feb 25. Also check the following LDS webpage: <http://familysearch.org/Search/af/family_group_record.asp?familyid=5307944>. This webpage may be mostly correct. Presumably you (or your husband?) is a descendant of one the 11 listed children of William Valentine & Joanna Crane. Then print out a pedigree for the correct child, but note that the husband of Joanna's grandmother Anna Magie (Megie) should be JOHN CRANE JR., Westfield burial 600 (not his first cousin Jonathan Miller Crane, Westfield burial 581)-- and there are no doubt other errors as well. Make sure to check the LDS Individual Records for each person (looking for alternate parent & spouse info), as well as the LDS Family Group Records. See also on-line Westfield burial list at <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Prairie/5096>. Happy hunting-- JOHN Q. (in Chicago). - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- Below is JQM's somewhat corrected version of <http://familysearch.org/Search/af/family_group_record.asp?familyid=6424050>. Maybe another subscriber to NJUnion can pinpoint the correct New Providence cemetery for the Valentines below. The Scotch Plains Baptist Cem. is another possibility (see NJUnion Scotch Plains posting of Feb. 24). Husband's Name Obadiah VALENTINE (AFN:G95T-K0) Born: 1730? Scotch Plains, Union Co., NJ Died: 19 May 1788 Scotch Plains, Union, NJ Buried: New Providence, Union, NJ Married: 1761? 1. [NJUNION] TOUCHON Bar and RI GREENES
    2. Bruce Cardner
    3. Jan, I have a feeling Bruce will get all sentimental again when I show him your letter. Leon, Jr. is still living, thought considerably older than we are. His son and granddaughter should really love to hear about Leon Sr.'s place, although Leon sadly has Alzheimers. I would LOVE to get a copy of the article you mentioned, and I would gladly pay postage, etc. That is so great! Bruce has been in Florida for a long time, now, but he gets so very homesick for NJ at times. (Not in the winter, though! <grin>) When he looks at the postcards, he remembers the exact locations, even if the buildings are not there anymore. He still asks everyone he meets from that area if they remember the hot dogs from a certain place (I will have to ask him the name). He compares all hot dogs with those. Pat, Yes, you are right about the Greene connection. Also the SDB church. I think Dr. Iretus Greene Cardner and wife Joanne Elizabeth Briggs were members at one time. I believe even until the 1870's.? Not sure. I will put up a separate post on Joanna Briggs Cardner. She was a foster child of the Thomas and Susannah Stillman of NY and NJ. Some interesting items of hers at the SDB Historical Society. ( I will get that post up) Iretus was the son of Barber J. Cardner and Malvina Colegrove. Malvina was the daughter of Eli Colegrove and Judith Greene. I will have to look back at my records to refresh my mind on Judith, but I think her dad was Capt. William Greene, but not sure. I have some church records that show that Barber J. was "excluded", but no date is given. I know that he and Malvina had two children, but Iretus is the only one I know. They must have divorced before 1840, as Malvina married a Fred Garner. Their daughter later married a Cardner. I have often wondered why they divorced, and if that would have excluded him from the church. He was shown on the 1880 census in Sullivan County, NY, with a very young wife. He was 70, she was 40ish. They had 2 daughters under 10. I forget all the details and would have to look it up. Sounds like an interesting scenario there. I believe Barber J. was the son of Barber Cardner and Polly Burdick, and I am writing places and phoning, trying to find some proof of that. I am convinced in my mind, but I would prefer more. I enjoyed both your posts so very much. Can't wait to share them with hubby.! Sydney Cardner

    2. Bruce, Oh you are great to offer..was hard to decide which one. My Dad worked for the Central RR and had many fun times in the parks..and used to shop on Broad St. in Elizabeth (in the 50s). Could you send the one of Broad St., Elizabeth please? We moved out of Elizabeth in the 40s, but I loved that town then. Thanks so much for the offer. Grace O'Kane

    1. Re: [NJUNION] Plainfield NJ MCMAHON Pub, Bar or Restaurant
    2. Bruce Cardner
    3. Pat's posting brought something to my husband's mind, though he does not remember that McMahon Pub. His remembers a little about a bar and sandwich place owned by his uncle, Leon Touchon. It was either in Sterling or Watchung. It was called Touchon's Grove. There was a grove in the back for people to take their lunches and have picnics. There was a baseball field, also. He remembers a large dance hall there also. He was fairly young, but he thinks it was in the 1930's or 40's. If you can call a bar "family-oriented" <g>, I guess this was. His line of the family did not go there often because of the "bar" image. Does anyone recall this place? There was a volunteer fire department near it. He has become very sentimental since we have been going through a large postcard collection that belonged to his aunt, Mable Briggs Cardner Van Doren. She did not marry until her 60's and had no children. I have been scanning the NJ postcards first. I have quite a few from Union County now. I am also doing Somerset County and some lovely ones from Monmouth County. I am hoping to upload them to a special collections site, but I have not uploaded to the web before. I am waiting on a couple of people to get back to me. When I get them on a site, I will let the list know how to see them. Meanwhile.......they are small jpeg files and I will send one or two as an attachment to those who might be interested. They are truly beautiful, many in black and white and mostly non-commercial sites, such as country roads, city streets, libraries, etc. I consider them treasures from 1905 to 1910. I know there is a site that has only old postcards, and I am thinking of trying that. I am waiting on one other site first. If anyone seems interested, I could list a few of the places in Union County. We are researching my husband's lines in Plainfield and Watchung (is that in Somerset?) from his great grandfather Dr. Iretus Greene CARDNER, and his great grandfather William Edouard TOUCHON. The CARDNERS appear to go back to RI in the 1700's, while the TOUCHONs came to the US from Switzerland in 1893. They were in Goshen, CT, before moving to Plainfield. William was a flower grower, butcher, and farmer. We have pictures of the family and a horse and buggy, which are just wonderful. Well, I certainly got side-tracked! Sorry about that, but I am just so excited about the cards, etc. Again, if anyone remembers Touchon's Grove, please contact us! Best to all on the list, Sydney Cardner (the Sydney is female) Florida -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Saturday, February 26, 2000 8:12 AM Subject: [NJUNION] Plainfield NJ MCMAHON Pub, Bar or Restaurant >Is there anyone out there who would look up and see if there was a McMahon >Pub, Bar or Restaurant in Plainfield NJ about late 1930's and 1940's.
