Hi Syd, The Morris Ave. Springfield print came out great. Thanks again and I'll download some of the others since it's a wonderful collection. Fred Reinman
Hello, I am very interested in the Plainfield post cards offered by Sydney and am happy to hear she'll scan them all and send a link. I lived on E. 7th Street and went to Maxim School for a short time before moving to Compton Ave. and attending Evergreen (I think that was the name) School. My grandfather, Grove P. Hinman had an artist studio on E 7th St. where he crafted many bronze items, including the statue of a fireman that stands in New Brunswick. Am looking for further information on the families below; Henry Hays, James M. Morrison and Ogden E. Meeker. I have a music box that belonged to my g. grandfather, James Morrison - supposedly won at a fair in Trenton. Anyone familiar with this fair that would have been before 1937? Barbara Benjamin
We just found an old business card.....Touchon's Floral Gardens, Growers of Quality Perennial and Alpine Plants, New Market, NJ Tel. Dunellen 2-6969-W. Now talk about getting nostalgic!!! This was my husband's grandfather. He died in 1937, so the card is pretty old. Jan Jacot, Could we possibly get a copy of the newsletter mentioned below about Leon Touchon? I will be glad to pay for copies and postage. Bruce says to ask you if you remember the Lawlers, Gunns, and Hewitts in Warren. He went to Watchung Boro and North Plainfield High School. (Long time ago! <grin>) I have had two emails bounce back from you, so I thought I would post to the list about the newsletter. Sydney {Here's how a Warren Township Historical Society newsletter (Vol. II, No. 1, Spring 1994 issue) reads, and there also is 1930s pixture of bar and dancehall with Sunoco Station in front: "Leon Touchon, whose ancestors were French-speaking Swiss, opened his general store and gasoline station on Stirling Road in the early 1930s. The area, then known as South Stirling (or Sterling) was sparsely populated except for nearby Plainfield Gardens}
Just thought I would let all of you know that I *plan* to have all of the Union County uploaded in the next day or so, hopefully by tomorrow. Or is that wishful thinking. I will send a link to the album. I am very excited about getting to share them. My husband and I have found some real treasures in the *barrel* of family stuff we had stored away. I hope to upload some of them under the heading of Nostalgia. They are pictures, not postcards, but are just wonderful of NJ, Union, around the 1930's. I think this site will allow you to print off also. So if you don't get the cards you requested, be patient as I can share better this way. I must say this has been the most polite list about asking for the scans. Very courteous. I offered to do something on another list and it got very burdensome. Sydney Cardner
Sending this to you as a sample what has been appearing on the Butler Co., OH Discussion List. I recognize many surnames that appear to be family names from NJ, so perhaps someone will want to access Butler Co., OH archives to see these Marriage Listings. Ohhhh John, Perhaps 'cause through "one message" generating "multi-responses" some extra bit of gleaning might possibly be opened up for someone or someones of us... sort of like 7 x 7 x 7 :-) Jan in California ---------- >From: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [NJUNION] postcard thoughts >Date: Mon, Feb 28, 2000, 10:00 AM > > The postcards of Sydney (Mrs. Bruce Cardner) sound like a great Union > Co., NJ, resource. Dear Sydney, I have sent a copy of your question about Touchon's Grove on to a very old friend of mind in Sterling, NJ. and hope he might have a really good answer for you which I will forward if he does not send it directly. However, I wondered if there is any chance that the place he is talking about might have been near Watchung Lake in Watchung because there is a volunteer fire dept close by there. Even further afield, I wondered if it might have been in Meyersville, NJ where I remember a family oriented bar with a very nice outdoor picnic site in back of it right in the center of Meyersville. Our cows once got loose and went up there to watch the picnickers and scared them half to death. I still have other old friends back there if this one doesn't come through and I'll keep checking. I know how compelling these questions about old places can become! Helaine
Dear Audrey, The Union Historical Society I'm aware of seems to meet at The Caldwell Parsonage on Caldwell Ave in Union. And I know it has enthusiastic members because I met one at the City Hall who was enthralled by all the old Union pictures I had. Someone very generous has been offering to send scans of postcards she has and although I don't yet know how to scan very well, I could try if there is any serious interest out there in some old pictures I have mostly of the early Union Police Dept from when my grandfather, Charles Hopkins, was the chief of police - around 1930. Helaine
Dear Sydney, If you are not already utterly overwhelmed by and buried in requests, I would love copies of the Plainfield cards especially the train station where I spent many happy hours "hanging out" with my grandfather's friends as a little girl. I am continually checking the Arcadia list of books, hoping they will publish a volume on Plainfield, but so far no luck. Thank you again for this very generous offer! Sincerely, Helaine Golann
The postcards of Sydney (Mrs. Bruce Cardner) sound like a great Union Co., NJ, resource. But I'm a computer novice and don't really understand why personal requests and thanks for Sydney's postcard copies are being transmitted via the NJUnion list rather than via the e-mail address she has already provided: <[email protected]>. .........John
Dear Jan, Read your note and you mentioned Singers. Do you remember the big Christmas parties Singers used to have for their employees and their guests. Having a neighbor working there, I got to attend. The presents we got were unbelievable. Also going down memory lane - every Saturday we went to the port area to shop and the Liberty Theatre showing children's shows all day Saturday. Great memories! Barbara New Jersey [email protected]
Dear Helaine, I saw your note re: police department pictures. I would love to have them if you can possibly scan them. My great uncle, Francis McKeon, started as a "cop" and retired as a detective of the force. I don't know if you remember the big St. Patrick's Day parade, but he was one of the many marchers. My other great uncled, Rich Cummings always marched in the "Top Hat" brigade. Thank you. Barbara [email protected]
Van Horn & Dolan Real Estate & Insurance office had wallpaper made from a long series of photographs of Broad Street Elizabeth around 1950. Does anyone on the list know what ever happened to the negatives? -John
Does anyone have the name HUEY in their tree? Searching for Aaron and Abby Huey born around 1798 and 3 children: John (1830) Isaac (1833) & Susan (1837 ) Abby was listed (alone) as a cook in 1860 Elizabeth census no mention of husband or children tia for any help Evelyn

Sydney, Thank you for your kind offer. I would like to have the Westfield postcards. Thank you again for sharing with others. John [email protected]

Jan, There were cobblestone streets in Elizabeth in the late 40s. We left there in the late 40s and they were there. Sure miss them..I remember all you mentioned. I went to Holy Rosary School..no longer there..sad..and my Grandpa was one of the founders. Grace O'Kane Bruce is a gem for sharing these cards. how I loved living there!
Sydney: I am interested in the RR postcards. Both my grandfather and great-grandfather worked for the RR. so seeing what they saw would be interesting. Thanks for your generosity!!! Lois
