    3. Correction, please. I have not yet put up Somerset. I put up Monmouth. I put the Duke residence in the wrong county. I am from Florida, a native. I will go back to the county list site and correct it. I only wish to share some beautiful pictures. This is a truly fantastic collection, and we are lucky to have it. We would be selfish not to share, and I am doing it in the only way I know. I believe the reason a lot of stuff goes back to the list is by accident. When a list is set with the Reply To Function set to "return to the list", that usually means the listmaster/mistress wants people to do so. However I belong to only one other list that way, and I find I make a mistake on a personal message sometimes. I simply just forget and click the Reply To button. Frankly, I enjoy the postings, but I am realistic enough to know that a few do not. I once found a cousin on another list through a reminiscing post in which she casually mentioned my gggrandfather! So please, when you go to the link below, look on the left side of the pictures. It will show what other pages I have put up. That way I won't have to mention it again and risk offending someone. 3. Sydney and Bruce, I do not have hesitancy to putting this on the Union list... For every killjoy there are a dozen of us who are appreciative to the unusual visuals you have provided us of old time areas in New Jersey. To me, genealogy is not only chasing dead people and their siblings' "data", but also the "places" to which the folks of my roots were connected. Great work, and yes, thank you for "sharing" ... However, I've been looking at someone who one one census is recorded as a "cord(s)wainer," while the (Philadelphia) directory says of him "cordwood." No doubt some else can resolve this mystery. 2. Harman, All of these postcards are a part of our heritage..Sorry you feel that way, but pictures add to your family history. I can show these to my children and grandchildren the way my birthplace looked in my father's time. Genealogy is about history, and the pictures are too. Grace O'Kane

    3. Hi Helaine, I think we have chatted before on this forum... Not only do I remember the Oxford, but I remember the "Liberty"just up the Street...Seems to me we paid about .11 to get into one of them...I spent many a Sunday afternoon there, and by myself, while my family was playing cards around the corner--would we dare do that today? I remember triple features, I think (?), of such as Laurel and Hardy, Abbott and Costello, Gene Auntry, and also a "serial" along with it... Yes, and in those days I guess we always had the uniformed ushers! Such memories, arn't they great? 2. Hi......I lived in Plfd from 1943-1970....my family came there in 1860s and stayed until 1970s....The Oxford was torn down in late 60s, the Babcott burnt down in early 70s but the Liberty is still sanding but vacant for abt 25 yrs. The two Strand theaters are gone also. The beautiful library was torn down and replaced with a non descript box. My family were on the Police Dept. My grand father and great uncle were chief of police from late 1920s to 1938. My father was a detective from 1927 to 1956. John J. Flynn

    3. Dear Sydney, I'm very curious about what the name of the building that has the X over it is - Does it tell on the back of the card? The building I would love to locate is the Oxford Theatre which I think was either closed ortorn down in the early 50's. My uncle Ted Fulton worked there as a projectionist so my brother and I knew everyone who worked there. (We especially loved Ann Deregan (sp?) who was always in a spiffy uniform and happy to take us behind the scenes when things weren't busy.) We also got to sit in the balcony long after it was closed to large groups for safety reasons. Traveling circuses also used to come and perform on the Oxford's stage and my brother was once propelled out onto the stage in the midst of a dog act when we were back stage when we shouldn't have been and a "magnificent baby elephant" gave him a mightly shove that threw him though the curtains... Was anyone on the list there that day or any other? I would love to hear from anyone who remembers "The Oxford". Helaine

    3. Hi Judy, More of a question than aid. You post rings a bell. Have you seen the 1880 census on this family? Is it Richard who reports one parent as born in Massachusetts? It may well be coincidence, but have a great-great grandmother Catarine Clark "McMen" who moved over to the Summit area from New York City in 1850. She was most consistently reported by her children as born in Massachusetts. Her son lived most of his life in Summit. Dave McMane Paris, France

    3. I'm new to the list. I'm researching the Richard U. CLARK family of Summit. They moved there in the 1870's from Brooklyn. Father: Richard U. Clark. Mother(s): Emma (1880 census) and Rebecca (1900 census). I'm not too sure about Emma. Rebecca was, I believe, Rebecca Caldwell. Children: Richard U., Jr., Mary, Rebecca, Irving G., Legrant, Robert A., Virginia, Gertrude, Constantinea. Gertrude married a James Hogger. Irving married a woman named (or nicknamed) Mame. Richard U. Jr., married Mary Porter. Anyone connect, or does anyone know of good genealogy resources in Summit? Judy Shenk Astoria OR

    3. All uploaded just fine, but right about midnight (just as I got most of it finished) the server crashed. Problem is, I thought I did something wrong. It just came back up a few minutes ago. Click once on the thumbnails to enlarge. Click again to get the original which seems to be printable. Thanks to some help from a fellow lister, it was quite easy. 2. Dwight Golann
    3. Dear Helaine, I saw your note re: police department pictures. I would love to have them if you can possibly scan them. My great uncle, Francis McKeon, started as a "cop" and retired as a detective of the force. I don't know if you remember the big St. Patrick's Day parade, but he was one of the many marchers. My other great uncled, Rich Cummings always marched in the "Top Hat" brigade. Thank you. Barbara [email protected] Dear Barbara, I wish I remembered these events, but I actually never lived in Union myself although my father grew up there. Charles Hopkins Jr. - he graduated from Union High School in 1934. They lived on Chestnut Street where it overlooks the Galloping Hill Golf Course and his father had a pool where all the kids in Union used to come to swim and a miniature train and racing course open for any kids to use. He later had to remove them because they were "attractive nuisances"! I'm always hoping to find someone who remembers them! My cousins, George and Janet Freund, grew up there a bit later - their father was the county surveyer, I think. South Park Terrace used to be Hopkins Place year ago and my dad helped build some of the houses there. Francis McKeon is a familiar name though I do not find him among the 1930 Union police dept pictures. During which years did he serve?? Do you have a copy of the newspaper articles that appeared in the Union Leader in 1972 tracing the history of the Union police dept? You might find them interesting and I'd be glad to copy the ones I have for you though I do not yet have the skill to scan them onto a website from which you could download them. I also have only the first couple which concerned my grandfather, but the series continued for longer. I hope I can help you out! Helaine

    3. My husband and I have found some real treasures in the *barrel* of family stuff we had stored away. I hope to upload some of them under the heading of Nostalgia. They are pictures, not postcards, but are just wonderful of NJ, Union, around the 1930's. Wow! That will be wonderful, Sydney! Most of my dad's family was there then. I assume you have the Acadia book on Union though it is out of print now. Once I get some instruction on how to scan and jpeg or whatever, I might be able to add to your site! Glad you found Touchon's. If it was on Sterling Road, it might have been between Sterling and Watchung in Warren Township. Helaine
