    1. [NJUNION] Union County Civil War Soldiers
    2. I would like to than everyone who responded with great information about soldiers from Union County and Elizabeth who fought in the civil war. I am on vacation in florida and unfortunately I read my mail on my brother's computer who lives here and all of the great emails that I received were lost. I thought that they would automatically be saved in my email file just as if I were using my own computer. I would greatly appreciate it if those that sent me information could please resend the email to me so that I can save it. Thanks so much for the great response. Below is the original email message sent to the list. Thanks again, Rich My great-grandfather William McSweeney came from County Cork, Ireland to fight in the civil war. He and several other Irish men were paid to fight for the north. He stayed her for a year and then returned to Ireland. I am told that a picture of his company with him in it hung in the county courthouse in Elizabeth. Does anyone know of a civil war company from Union County. I would appreciate any information.

    3. You write: > Could someone tell me if the above cemetery is still there? < My answer is, it had better be, as I still have a plot there! When I was last there in late Feb., I made a note of a stone for "Lydia, wife of Nehemiah Hand, d. Nov. 9(?) 1776 in the 75th year of her age". Sorry, I didn't take a photo of it at the time, but I assure you the stone is there. 2. Harmon, Thanks so much for the information. Now if I can just find someone in the area to take a picture. If not maybe I can get there in a year or so. I live in Washington State. Are you a Hand descendant? Curious since you say you noted the dates. Penny

    1. [NJUNION] Morris Ave. Summit
    2. Aralynn McMane
    3. Hoping someone can orient me regarding Morris Ave. in Summit, 1905. The state cenus of that year shows my great-grandfather, William T. McMane, living at 117 Morris Ave. and Jonathan Bonell living at 282 Morris Ave. I'm puzzled by this, since I'm pretty sure Jonathan Bonnell was the son of Johnathan C. Bonnel, the "founder" of Summit and a man of very substantial means, as was his son. My great great-grandfather was a carpenter. Also, I thought Morris Ave. was in East Summit, and my impression (perhaps wrong?) was that it was not the most elegant part of town. Does not "compute." Can anyone help? Thanks for your kind attention. Dave McMane

    3. The 9th New Jersey Volunteers were formed at Elizabeth, NJ in 1861. My gggrandfather, John Peter RITTER was one of the founders. At the age of 44 he went off to war and spent many months in the swamps of North Carolina, with resulting dysentery, etc. There is an interesting history of the unit written by a swash- buckling type who formed the New Jersey Guauves (not exactly the word or spelling I want but someone will correct me. 3. Dear Listers, Does anyone have Winton Wilber in their ancestors? I have a new lead that he might have married my grandfather's daughter by his first wife, Olive M. Hedden. Found this name on the 1920 Union Co. NJ census. They also had a son Warren, b. 1915 and daughter Laura b. 1920. Would appreciate hearing from anyone about this person. Thanks in advance. There are people near Washington, DC who will research your ancestors war records for a fee. (about 39.00 plus a cost amounting to .10 cents a copy, plus postage. If anyone is interested in obtaining the complete civil war records of their ancestor through the help of a private researcher, I suggest they write to: Vonnie S. Zullo , 3506 Majestic Pine Lane in Fairfax, VA> She spends the better part of each week doing this research. Starting with her assistance, I have now been able to trace my ancestors back to 1653 in New Amsterdam. William Smalley Cadmus,

    2. ============================================== << Subj: Elizabeth, NJ Public Library archives Date: 4/6/00 10:21:10 AM Central Daylight Time From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Has anyone visited the archive collection at the Public Library in Elizabeth, NJ? I am wondering if it is worth the trip. Lucy Russell researching in Essex County: Browne, Crane, Hedden, Huntington, Riggs, Roberts, Sergeant >> ============================================== Hi Lucy. All this all depends on several factors. For one thing, if you're an Elizabeth resident, are you talking about a two block walk from your home, say, near the corner of Broad & Grand-- or will you be flying in from the Australian Outback? There is, or used to be, a large portrait of one of my relatives (a judge) near the library's front entrance, and that, along with his archived papers, might make the trip to the library (and its very helpful staff) worthwhile-- but perhaps only to me and a few others. Included in my data are a great many Cranes-- but almost all are descendants of Elizabethtown's Stephen Crane, ca. 1630-1709 (rather than his Newark contemporary Jasper Crane). Also I have Iots of Browns and Brownes, some 16th century Huntingtons, and several Roberts of late 18th century NYC, Newark, and Paterson. I also have a Harriet A. Hedden, born 1818 (wife of Matthias Potter) and, from the 1850 Newark census, an Aaron R. Hedden, born ca. 1826, and his wife Maria. But no kitchen sinks. Let me know if you think we can talk some genealogical turkey here. .........John (in Chicago).

    3. Yes, the Evergreen Cemetery which is located on Plainfield Avenue between 4th & 5th Streets in Plainfield is owned by 2 Churches: First Park Baptist Church 315 W. 7th Street Plainfield, NJ 07060 and Convent United Methodist church 631 E. Front Street Plainfield 07060 It is very much in disrepair and I have received the same warnings about visiting it but I will be going there next month with at least 2 other people in the day so hope to be safe. 3. Please excuse my error in suggesting that there were two Evergreen Cemeteries in the Elizabeth, NJ area. I did not realize that the Evergreen Cemetery I was referring to lies on the border of Elizabeth, NJ and Hillside, NJ and is called Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside. In addition, I suggested that the Evergreen Cemetery seemed to be safe. I last visited it about 7 years ago and may be it is not as safe as it was then. Sorry for the confusion. Bill Magie

    1. Re: [NJUNION] Visiting Evergreen Cemetery
    2. Bill Magie
    3. Please note that there may be two cemeteries by the name of Evergreen in the Elizabeth, NJ area. The one in Elizabeth, just west of the Newark Airport, is totally different from the Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside. I do not think that the Evergreen Cemetery in Hillside, NJ has any security problems. I believe that Gary is referring to the Evergreen Cemetery, which is adjacent to two Jewish cemeteries, and can be found a mile or so west of Newark Airport is bounded by Frelinghuysen Ave. on the east, North Broad Street on the south and Rt. 22 on the west, and I suspect may have security problems. You can locate the Evergreen Cemetery on the Yahoo map or on the Cosmi software "Travel Maps USA". It is difficult to discern the boundaries of the three cemeteries in the area mentioned above on these maps. I suspect that it is good advice to check out the security of the cemetery before you venture in alone. Bill [email protected] wrote: > Please listen to Gary and be careful.
