The Public Library in Elizabeth (across the street from the Union County Court House) has Elizabeth City Directories starting with 1868. Some of these are in delicate condition. The early ones include some neighboring communities. When using city directories, look up the surname, then look to see who else may be at that address. It may be a boarding house, etc, but often it shows an in-law, which can be important. Widows are often listed, and later issues also show name of wife. -John
Hi, What directories were published for the cities in Union County? I would be looking for information about Lloyd starting about 1896. I was able to trace them in Newark but they branched out about the late 1890s. Rita

The Cranford Chronicle, a weekly (Thursday, I think) newspaper, is the one you should look for.
Hi Penny sorry to bother you again so soon but is Phoebe a born Hand as well as married to Hezekiah. I wonder how closely related they were. Hi Cuz Penny Hezekiah is my 5th great grandfather also. I come down through his son Nehemiah Mathias and another Nehemiah. I only know one of Hezekiah's wives name Anna Ferrago. Do you know the other wives names? I picked up your "unsubscribe' message. PLEASE tell me how to do the same. I can't wait to get out from under these loads of messages without any answers to my questions. Can't seem to figure out the process. Thanks ---------- >From: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: Re: [NJUNION] Williams/NJ-OH-IA-CA >Date: Mon, Apr 17, 2000, 7:53 AM > >UNSUBSCRIBE >
Does anyone know if there was a 1915 NJ State Census for Union County? What would be the LDS Reel numbers? thanks in advance. Arlene Dunkum
Janice, Yes, I believe she was born a Hand but so far have not figured out which John she belongs to. There are so many redundant first names in the clan and in the book copy that I am sorry to say I haven't looked into that as far as I should. I won't have time for a while but will let you know. There is more than one intermarriage which I think was fairly common in those days for one reason or another. Wish I could tell you more and you are not a bother at all. Penny
Yes I believe he is the same. He also had 22 children with 3 wives and he died in April of 1800 Westfield, NJ Janice ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, April 17, 2000 5:13 PM Subject: Re: [NJUNION] Rahway Cemetery-HAND ANCESTORS > Is that Hezekiah b. ca 1728? Nov 1729, 2nd Nancy-----?, 3rd Anna (Nancy) b. ca 1750. It says her g.s.( I assume grave site) is Scotch Plains Chruchyard. Hope this helps you. It always feels good to do so. Penny

I note that Smith WILLIAMS was bondsman in 1795 for my William MILLS #1. I also note from the GREAVES papers that Sarah WILLIAMS, dau/o Benjamin (b 1748) & Sarah (???) Estate of William MILLS (#1). of Essex Co., NJ (MILLS family lived in Westfield Twp., Essex Co. (now Union Co.), NJ. My MILLS family lived in the same area as Deacon Andrew HETFIELD/HATFIELD) 20 Mar 1795- Intestate Record: Adms.: Jeremiah MILLS & William MILLS swore William MILLS died w/o a will. Bondsman: Smith WILLIAM(S) 15 Jan 1802-Inventory filed by appraisers. Hi, Yep, that's the one. I go on down his line through John, Nehemiah and another John, Penny
Arlene, 1915 was the last NJ state census. I know I looked up my relatives at the Elizabeth Public Library. Pat
If anyone has access to the main newspaper citizens of Cranford read, would you be willing to do an obit lookup for me? I would be willing to pay reasonable cost involved for a copy. My county library system cut out 'inter-library' loan department, and it's impossible to borrow any out of state films. I'm looking for the obit on Hermann FOCKE, died September 23, 1966, died in a nursing home named Brookside. Many thanks again, Karen
Is that Hezekiah b. ca 1728? If so he is my great 5 times grandfather. Penny
