    3. In regards to the Rahway Cemetery - the gentleman in the office is rather old and has been hospitalized a few times in the past two years for various ailments, during which time there is no one in the office. I work in Rahway, and have asked a few times if I could look through the books myself, but I was told that they are too old and fragile to let everyone look through them. The cemetery is a thriving concern as they are selling spaces in their soon to be constructed musaleum, and why they don't hire another person to do this is beyond me. I don't know if they are still connected with the First Presbyterian Church in Rahway, but those people are equally uncooperative when it comes to sharing their records. There is a book of tombstone inscriptions for the Rahway cemetery. One copy is in the Westfield library. 2. Does anyone know, politically speaking (and I know this can confuse things in New Jersey!) how the Rahway Cemetery is organized? Who is the governing body, who makes the decisions, and who should really be contacted to try to get adequate access to their records? Thanks! Dave Kane

    2. Rita I would be really surprised if the cemetery will do this extra work, unless they are going to charge you for it. How many years ago were you there? Cemeteries get so much Vandalism today, this could also be the reason they are missing. I have found similar in other cemeteries and they tell me that the Stones are the responsibility of the Family. Also they do not recognize Perpetual Care anymore. The answer I received on that at other places is that they cannot afford it. Good Luck to you anyhow and I hope it works out.

    1. [NJUNION] Cemeteries
    2. Hi, My experience with cemeteries is that they do not keep records of whether or not stones have been placed. I went to the cemetery in Brooklyn with my mother the year after my grandmother died. I remembered the part of the cemetery the plot was in and that there were markers. My mother pointed out "This is Aunt so and so" etc. Imagine my surprise when I went to the cemetery last fall with my sons and there were no markers. The staff in the office had sent me a list of who was buried there, the date and their age. I went into the office and spoke to them about the markers. Their explanation was that if they were markers (slabs on the ground) they sink over time. They said that they would have the groundcrew use poles this spring and see if they can locate them. If so they will dig them up and restore them. Hope this helps, Rita

I have the obituary of my great great grandfather, Henry Gabriel. He was an elderly Civil War veteran buried in the Rahway Cemetery in 1922. I knew for a fact that he was there, and I wrote (several times) and asked for an approximate location of his gravestone. Eventually they wrote back and told me that he did NOT have a stone, that his grave was unmarked. This seemed odd to me, but I accepted it......after all, they would know! Several years later I went to the cemetery in search of Henry Gabriel's in-laws. I found their headstones, and as I was stepping back to take a photograph, I tripped over..........you guessed it.......my great great grandfather's headstone. The very headstone that the Rahway Cemetery folks told me did not exist. Obviously this wasn't important to them, but it was a treasure to me, and I am so glad that fate intervened, or I might have taken them at their word, and never found Mr. Gabriel's gravestone. This was a valuable lesson to me, though. Sometimes a "dead end" is not a dead end at all. Doesn't a cemetery....which is actually a business.......keep record books? I would love to see the Rahway Cemetery records. Kathy

    1. [NJUNION] Rahway Cemetery
    2. Hello all, I just arrived home to find a much awaited letter from Rahway Public Cemetery on St. George Avenue in my mailbox. I previously sent them (2/1/200) a SASE with letter enclosed asking for further information about two family groups buried there, hoping for anything they might have of record. Despite two courteous phone calls from me in the interim, and several assurances that "We're working on it..", PLUS my original $25 check, which, oddly enough, was cashed promptly and which was required for the "search", I received in response one poorly handwritten letter, or rather note, barely literate, with five family members listed, "complete" with partial death dates and plot numbers. I had been hoping for a plot map of each, maybe a few birth or death places and dates, and the usual "anything else" in the file. Needless to say I am dissappointed at the lack of concern and professionalism shown by this organization. Maybe the cemetery is underfunded, maybe they are understaffed, I don't know, but I would think a public cemetery with many, many members of Colonial New Jersey families buried in it could do better. I would caution anyone before they send $25 to be aware that they search may take some time and the results, if they can be gauged by my experience, may be minimal to nothing. Has anyone else had a more plesant experience with these folks? I hope so! Dave Kane San Leandro CA

    1. Re: [NJUNION] Need Info Public Library in Elizabeth
    2. George, I took a trip to the area in Oct. and actually found more at the Westfield Library. I was very disappointed in the Elizabeth Lib. Westfield had an extensive collection of information. Also if you have time go to the NJ Archives, although I think I had a notice from them recently about moving to another location and files not being available for several months. 2. Kathleen Pantano
    3. Hi Pat, I neglected to write down which year of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey these came from - sorry. I have a separate list somewhere with the dates and will post info when I find it. "Union County Gravestones SCOTCH PLAINS BAPTIST CHURCH YARD The Scotch Plains Baptist Church was organized August 5, 1747, by fifteen members from the Piscataway Baptist Church at Edison (Stelton), Middlesex County. A building had been erected in 1742, which was enlarged in 1759. The first pastor was the Rev. Benjamin Miller, who served from February 13, 1748, until his death on November 14, 1781. He was succeeded in 1785 by the Rev. William Van Horne. The church, with it’s adjoining burial ground, is located on the southeast corner of Mountain and Park avenues in Scotch Plains. These inscriptions were first copied in 1922 by members of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, and subsequently supplemented by them on November 4, 1952. The early brownstones in the graveyard are in poor condition. Many are fallen and broken; some have disintegrated completely. Inscriptions enclosed in brackets were either missing or illegible in 1952. An unusual number of later stones omit the age, and some have no dates whatsoever. Family researchers are also referred to "Scotch Plains Baptist Church Members, 1747-1814," published in the January 1932 issue of this magazine (Vol. VII, No. 3), and to "Scotch Plains Baptist Church Marriage Records, 1758 - 1761," printed in the New Jersey Archives (First Series, Vol. XXII). The original church records have been microfilmed by the Rutgers University Library. UNION COUNTY GRAVESTONES p. 135 Hand, Annie, b. 1870, d. 1936. Hand, Benjamin*; wife Sallie*; dau. Pollie, d. 2. Dave, Go to www.nara.gov see for Military records..might be hard because of the fire. Another way is to try to get his records from the local draft board where he was inducted. There are downloadable forms to ask for records..ask for ALL records. Grace

    2. Listmembers, Sorry that this is a bit off topic, but does anyone know where I can write for World War II records for one of my relatives? All I know is that he served in Sicily and may have received the Purple Heart, and that he died in 1948. If anyone has any suggestions, please Email me privately. Thanks very much! Dave

    3. Hi All, The listing in the Scotch Plains cemetery reads : "Hand, Hezekiah*; widow Anna, d. Dec. 30, 1808, in 58th year." *indicates relationship is stated on stone (not that Hezekiah is buried there.) There are a fair number of Hands buried there. Let me know if you need this info.
