Hi, I am writing about the topic of genetics and genealogy. As genealogists, we should investigate all alternatives in forming familial relationships. When we can search the paper trail no more, we should consult scientists. They use a y-polymorphism DNA PCR test (males) as well as Mtdna tests (females) in order to identify ancestor relations. The results can show that different clans are related, even though there are no paper records. This is just another avenue open to us. I have recently expanded coverage on my website. The site now includes laboratories that will test our DNA in order to find the most recent common ancestor of 2 or more individuals from different clans who we believe are related. What do you do when you run out of records to search? Get a y-polymorphism DNA test by the PCR method. Please check out http://www.duerinck.com. There are 3 genetic links on that page: a page describing what and how it is done, along with an example; another page with labs that do this work (still need more!); and a page on genetic diseases, along with links, including labs that test for this as well. By the way, I am looking for additional labs, in the USA and elsewhere in the world, that do the y-polymorphism dna pcr test as well as mtdna tests in order to identify ancestor relations. Thanks for listening, Kevin Duerinck Des Plaines, Illinois USA
Hi If this reply was to my Inquiry I just thought that someone could look up something for me that had access to a directory. I know where to go to get the information and Yes, I can order a film at the FHL, but so many times I take a trip to the Library for someone who asks and look up 1 request fpr them in Area's that I have access to.Just thought someone would be nice enough to do it for me. If they would like money to do it I'll also pay them. But for anyone who has access to a Directory in Union Co. at the Library, 1 request is usually not a long involved effect, it is only a nice gesture on their part..I still believe in helping one another and I think at one point or another we all ask for help.
Hi - I'm new to the list. Perhaps you can answer a question I have. Is there an index to the 1870 Union Co. federal census, or is there a project under way to create one? What I most need is the index to Elizabeth. I am researching the Bennett and Weeks surnames. Thanks, Judy Underwood
Go to www.familysearch.org and under Custom Search go to Family History Library Catalog to look up what microfilmed city directories are available. You could also try the county or state library. ---Robin
I have Kielys (Keilys) in Elizabeth from around 1860 forward. John Keily married Bridget Costine around 1855. Both were supposedly from Cloyne in Co. Cork, Ireland. They had Johanna (b. 1857, md. George Mullen), Mary Jane (b. c. 1859), Julia (b. c. 1862, md. William J. Flynn), John (b. c. 1863, md. Kerrnelis), Elizabeth M. (b. 1865, md. Charles Danforth Cree; my ancestors), Richard (b. 1867, d.y.), Frances (b. 1869, md. John J. Smith) and Dennis E. (b. 1872, md. Amelia T. Lieb). Any connection? The Rahway Cemetery is indeed understaffed. They just have that tiny little building. I don't think very good records were kept early on. This was not a sophisticated private cemetery like Fairview in Westfield or Evergreen in Elizabeth. It started out as a public ground like the Colonial Cemetery in Westfield, which by the way doesn't even have an office. Fortunately, enough organizations have adopted the Colonial Cemetery so that it is maintained and copies of the transcriptions are readily available. I suspect the problem at Rahway is a high volume of inquiries, limited staff to respond and sketchy records. But they should tell you this up front before accepting your money . . . The Scotch Plains Baptist Church Yard inscriptions begin in Volume 35, Number 2 at page 62 (surnames A-D). They continue with D-H (Hetfield) in 35, #3 at page 130. H-P are in 36, #1 at p. 29. P-Z are in 36, #2 at p. 86. Also, more specifically, an individual marked with a * is mentioned on the stone of somebody else listed in that entry. For example, the second stone listed below is for Pollie, but the inscription indicates that she is the daughter of Benjamin and Sallie. There are no stones for Benjamin or Sallie themselves. Gary On Wed, 19 Apr 2000 21:49:01 -0700 (PDT) [email protected] writes: Hi Pat, I neglected to write down which year of the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey these came from - sorry. I have a separate list somewhere with the dates and will post info when I find it. "Union County Gravestones SCOTCH PLAINS BAPTIST CHURCH YARD The Scotch Plains Baptist Church was organized August 5, 1747, by fifteen members from the Piscataway Baptist Church at Edison (Stelton), Middlesex County. A building had been erected in 1742, which was enlarged in 1759. The first pastor was the Rev. Benjamin Miller, who served from February 13, 1748, until his death on November 14, 1781. He was succeeded in 1785 by the Rev. William Van Horne. The church, with its adjoining burial ground, is located on the southeast corner of Mountain and Park avenues in Scotch Plains. These inscriptions were first copied in 1922 by members of the Genealogical Society of New Jersey, and subsequently supplemented by them on November 4, 1952. The early brownstones in the graveyard are in poor condition. Many are fallen and broken; some have disintegrated completely. Inscriptions enclosed in brackets were either missing or illegible in 1952. An unusual number of later stones omit the age, and some have no dates whatsoever. Family researchers are also referred to "Scotch Plains Baptist Church Members, 1747-1814," published in the January 1932 issue of this magazine (Vol. VII, No. 3), and to "Scotch Plains Baptist Church Marriage Records, 1758 - 1761," printed in the New Jersey Archives (First Series, Vol. XXII). The best genealogical collection in and regarding Union County families is at the Westfield Library. There's a lot on early Elizabeth families at the NJ Historical Society in Newark, but there's so much there it's difficult to know where to look. Special Collections at the Alexander Library in New Brunswick also has a lot of early material. The Westfield Library has city directories for Westfield going back to about 1900. The earliest 10 or so years are photocopied from larger books, bound in clear plastic sheets and shelved with the later years. They also have the Union County reels of the state and federal censuses, plus microfilm of most issues of the Westfield Leader (and a few years of the Union County Standard). The library is located at 550 East Broad Street. Phone is (908) 789-4090. As of 1997, hours were 10 am to 9 pm Mon to Thurs, and 10 am to 5 pm Fri and Sat. Call to confirm this is still correct. Hello..........My family lived in Plainfield from 1850s to 1970s......what names are you looking for?.............John J. Flynn
Judy, Thanks for the information about a book in the Westfield Memorial Library that has the Rahway Cemetery Tombstone inscriptions. It will probably be much easier to check that out than to bother the people at the cemetery, especially if the one gentleman has been ill at times that takes care of the office. Joyce
A tongue in cheek suggestion: Perhaps we should all take a "vacation" together in Rahway for two months (ARGHHHH!) and try to organize all those records. Alice in Vermont
