Could someone tell me what type of church records are available for Union County (specifically New Providence), and where/how to access them? I have an ancestor (Jeremiah Raddin) who died between 1870 (he was alive for the census) and 1880 (his wife died, a widow), more than likely in New Providence. I haven't been able to locate a death certificate, and am hoping to find his death date from church records. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Tom Smith in CT
Anyone know of the SCUDDER family of Westfield with children: Anne m ? FRENCH; Mary (Polly) b late 1750's/early 1750's married Charles HOLE in Westfield Presbyterian Ch., Union Co., NJ May 1778'; Noah; Abijah (?Corbus?)b 1746?; Jane (Jenny) m John BADGLEY; Lydia m Jonathan BADGLEY; Benjamin, Joseph, Capt. John, and Rachel m John SQUIRE. Their parents seem to have deserted them as I can find no one who fits. 'The Greaves Papers' (which I know are not exactly accurate) says Mary was the sister of Capt. John Scudder, but there are so many John's don't know which this may be. SLOAT's - I don't know if there were any in Union Co. or not, but I have a Judith SLOAT b 1764 NY? (married in Sussex Co., NJ 1784) whose parentage I am also trying to find. Hi- This has been an incredible week! Both sides were found! First, let me admit that I am Barbara, Carol`s friend. I used her name to help in the search--maybe a family name? Believe it or not, it was! She was named for her gmother, Caroline/Carrie SLOVER. [Plus, Carol was too nervous to search on her own, LOL.] Turns out, Carol has a very large--and friendly--SADOWSKY/SLOVER family in NJ. Time for me to step back, altho, I have enjoyed "meeting" all of you. Carol`s e-mail is cnigro@cfl.rr.com and I know she`d love to hear from you directly. Thanx again, Barbara : )
I`ve found my SADOWSKY family! Joe, Ginny & Margaret were born in So. Amboy. [parents: Joe & Sadie SADOWSKY] Still looking for Marie SLOVER. I`ve been told that she was born in So. Amboy--Mechanicsville? I lost the info I had on this family and need to re-connect. Thanx, Carol : )

Dear Listers, With the holidays approaching, our email boxes sometimes become full to overflowing. When that happens, the NJUnion list email will make 4 attempts to send you mail, and if your box is full all 4 times, it will delete your name off the NJUnion list. If you don't receive email from the list for a few days, post a short query to see if you are on the list and still receiving the emails. If not, you can resubscribe (see www.rootsweb.com/~njunion for details). Happy Thanksgiving everyone! ---Robin Mason

My family (JOBB, POTH, KNOPH, VOLLMAN, FORD) were immigrants to Elizabeth New Jersey around 1900. When they passed away they were listed as members of these societies. I am looking for information on just what they were. If anyone can help, I sure would appreciate it: The societies were: Pioneer Ladies of Elizabeth Fidel Singing Society German-Hungarian Sick and Death Benefit Society Shepherds of Bethlehem Star of Elizabeth Lodge 100 Order of Shepherds of Bethlehem Elizabeth Patriotic Organization Again, any information would surely be appreciated as most all members of my family that lived and died during this time belonged to these organizations. There's a view of the Singer plant in the lower right portion of the excellent bird's eye view of Elizabeth at the Library of Congress archives. To access, go to the Library of Congress website, Geography and Map Division. Select Panoramic Maps, Geographic Locations, US States, United States, New Jersey. Then select 15--New Jersey--Elizabeth c1898. Once yhou get the hang of how to navigate the map, you will find the sprawling Singer Plant amidst the railroad tracks about a third the way up the map on the far right. I think there is also an inset along the border of the map showing another view of the plant.
Does anyone have info on the old Singer Plant that opened around 1881? Was it located in Linden, Elizabeth or Newark? Maybe a street name? I have a gr grandfather (Alexander Bennet) that lived on Staten Island and crossed the river to get to work. He was brought from England to open this plant and died in the Blizzard of '88 on his way to his job. Any help is appreciated. My email is mb329@msn.com Thanks MargaretGet more from the Web. Hi List, I've been doing some research on the VLIET surname and wondered if there are any books on the history of Vliettown. I think it's in Union county. Perhaps a local library may have something. Thanks, Bob Phillips
My grandfather, Theodore Jones Miller (b. 1868 d. 1930)and wife Ella (nee Dongan) moved to Plainfield or Westfield about 1901 from New York City when in their thirties. The gg father was also named Theodore Jones Miller (m. Carolyn Conklin) and I have not been able to find out anything certain about him. I don't know if he died in New York or perhaps lived near his son in later life in New Jersey. Any leads or info would be appreciated. Lee MillerGet more from the Web.
