    1. RE: Wm CURRENT after Rev.
    2. Marilyn Current
    3. Cathy, I left out a step of the process of Wm. Current's "limbo years", following the revolution. As I said, he was prob. in Newton in 1793. In Sept. 1796 he may have been in Newark, where he got a signed affidavit from 3 former Sussex Co. neighbors of his character and Loyalist activites, in order to apply for Crown lands in Upper Can. Was Newark a last hold-out for Loyalists? Why would they be congregating there when they couldn't return to their former homes? Does anyone have any thoughts on this? Current's father-in-law, Joseph Lemon, had purchased such a large tract of land in Oxford Twp., maybe William Current just lived on his land with his family? William seems to have been 'in limbo' after the war was over, prior to Joseph Lemon's death in 1792, and may have even been prevented from returning to the county due to extreme anti-loyalist sentiments. In those circumstances, there was no use in Joseph Lemon bequething any of his land to his daughter, Esther, and her husband, William. I found Esther and William's 18=year-old son, Joseph Current, in New Town in 1793. His father was probably living there, too, though perhaps unofficially. Maybe I need to do more research in Newton. Sorry, Cathy DiPietro -----Original Message----- From: Marilyn Current [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2004 6:36 PM To: Cathy & Vin DiPietro; [email protected] Subject: RE: [NJSUSSEX-L] Lemon deed Thank you very much, Cathy! So now, from this, I know the Lemons moved to Oxford in May, 1772. Do you happen to find any mention of William Current in the deed books? He was already married to the Lemon's daughter, Esther, and I believed they moved to Oxford at the same time, but have no proof. William may have forfeited his lands in Oxford sometime between 1783 and 1793, due to his Loyalist activities during the war. (In 1783 he was character witness for his neighbor, Peter Appleman's Loyalist claim, so must have been living at that time still, in Oxford. In 1793 his son Joseph was listed on a tax list in Newtown. Wm. Current wasn't mentioned, but I believe they were living in the same household, as Joseph didn't marry until 1800. Then, in 1796 the family moved together to Niagara Dist., Ont.) I would really like to find where his lands were, and in what year he bought them, and when he lost them. thank you so much for your help Marilyn Current -----Original Message----- From: Cathy & Vin DiPietro [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Tuesday, June 08, 2004 3:56 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NJSUSSEX-L] Lemon deed Sussex County Deed Book E page 302 dated 14 Dec 1796 Elizabeth SWAYZE and Joshua SWAYZE, executors of the LWT (Last Will and Testament) of Isreal SWAYZE, dec'd, of Oxford to John & Michael LEMON of Fishing Creek Twp., Northumberland, PA Whereas Isreal SWAYZE by his bond datd 2 May 1772 bound himself to make deeds for lands in Oxford to the said Joseph LEMON and he deceased and left a LWT dated 19 Dec 1792 wherein he bequeathed to John & Michael LEMON equally between them the said lands.
