    3. Roz, Any chance your Lt. (fnu) Barton was the same as Lt. Col. Joseph Barton, of Sussex Co.: I was sent the following awhile back from Ernie Wirdel, a Current family researcher: From an article entitled " The Price of Loyalty" by Michael Boles published in the "Sussex County Almanack" produced by the Sussex County Historical Society. This article appeared in the WINTER 1998 issue: Fact: One of the most powerful weapons New Jersey had in fighting the British during the Revolutionary War was the passing of punitive laws that enabled the outright confiscation of property belonging to individuals loyal to the King. From the ALMANACK "The hardest hit were Oliver DeLancey and Joseph Barton. DeLancey, a member of a famous New York political family had been acquiring land in Sussex County for many years through Barton, his local agent" "These two men (DeLancey and Barton) ranked as two of the largest landowners, and both were high ranking officers in the British Army's Loyalist Corp. While DeLancey lost hundreds of acres, Barton's loss was more personal. On September 13, 1779 Barton's 500 acre farmstead in Papakating, near Newton was sold at auction." Later the British began to review claims for compensation by American Loyalists, including a number from Sussex County. Invariably these individuals were urged to migrate to Canada. In a contingent article that also appeared in the Almanack (Fall 2001), is an extraction from the January 12, 1778 issue of a New York City newspaper, "The New York Gazette and Weekly Journal". It quotes as follows: "Last Wednesday died of the Small pox, in her 48th year, Mrs. Barton, wife of Colonel Joseph Barton, of the 5th Battalion of the Loyalist New Jersey Corps; she had been driven with 7 small children from their estate in Sussex County where she had endured every sort of persecution from the rebels. She was stripped of her property whilst the Colonel was a prisoner of the rebels at Weathersfield in Connecticut. She was a valuable member of society, and her death is greatly regretted" Or, here are some other choices: Following is a list of all the Barton officers who served in the New Jersey Volunteers during the course of the American Revolution from 1776 to 1783. http://www.royalprovincial.com/military/musters/1njv/njvvacant1.htm The On-Line Institute for Advanced Loyalist Studies New Jersey Volunteers Roster of Officers 1776-1783 No. Name Battalion Rank & Date of Commission/Warrant 21. BARTON, Thomas 3rd Chaplain in 1779 -----Original Message----- From: Roz Bellis [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Sunday, June 06, 2004 2:01 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [NJSUSSEX-L] Rev War: BELLIS/CURREN/MAXWELL/BARTON in 2nd Regiment Hunterdon STRYKKER's "Officers and Men of New Jersey in the Revolutionary War" lists these individuals 2nd Regiment Hunterdon, Capt Maxwell's Company: Capt John MAXWELL, Commander (apparently served in Sussex County militia as a Lieutenant, if I'm reading Strykker's info correctly) Lt Robert MAXWELL Pvt Andrew BELLOS (BELLIS) Pvt Richard CURREN 2nd Regiment Hunterdon, Staff: Lt. BARTON (fnu) served on the staff of the 2nd Regiment Hunterdon Could anyone help to answer these questions: 1. Is this the same John MAXWELL whose name is in the Sussex Co. Deed Books as having deposed witnesses James BISHOP & Robt ALLISON on 28 February 1797. This was with regard to the December 1796 transfer of land from the heirs of Isaac SWAYZE of Oxford to the heirs of Joseph LEMON, also of Oxford. This land was located near the Beaver Brook, presumably in the vicinity of Swayzes Mills. 2. Was Robert MAXWELL related to his company commander, John? 3. Was Richard CURREN's name mispelled? Was he actually a CURRENT? 4. What was Lt. BARTON's first name? Does anyone know if STRYKKER's book comes in digital format? It lists soldier's names in alphabetical order, but I would love to be able to query his data by military unit level (the book does this for officers, but not enlisted men.) Thanks!
