On 19 August 1778 the Council of Safety of the State of New Jersey charged John Woortman (Wortman) with high treason, but I don't know which county he came from. There were about 5 men named John Wortman in New Jersey at that time. "My" John Wortman was charged with being the head of a party of Tories who had agreed to waylay and capture a party of men and carry them to Col. Butler and the Indians. That seems like a long way to take prisoners unless they went by boat. Bergen County, Sussex or Hunterdon seem the most likely. I've looked various places but have found nothing. Does anyone have any ideas? Charlene in Oregon
