Sylvia If you can, leave a day for a trip to the NJ State Archives in Trenton. I'm sure you'll find it worthwhile! They have loads of early NJ records on microfilm and in manuscript collections. You would be almost guaranteed to find answers to some of your Sussex County questions there.
