    3. Sussex Register newspaper, Sussex, NJ dated Thursday 15 Dec 1904 "Borough of Stanhope" - column With the death of Caroline SMITH, which occurred on Weds. Dec. 7th, Stanhope lost its oldest resident. Mrs. SMITH was the widow of Amos SMITH, and since his death 13 years ago, has lived at her home on Main st. She passed away in the fullness of years, being ninety-five and over. Mrs. SMITH was a good woman in every respect, and will be missed as much in this community, where she had lived for over sixty years. Her maiden name was WOODRUFF, and after her marriage came from her home in Flanders to reside here. Amos SMITH, her husband, kept the Stanhope house and hsd Daniel WEBSTER as a guest over night when the distinguished orator spoke at a meeting in Stanhope, during the Presidential campaign of 1840. She is survived by three daughters, Carolline, wife of George T. KNIGHT, Mrs. Harriet ROSE and Miss Helen SMITH. Funeral services were helf Saturday afternoon at her late residence, conducted by Rev. C. W. DEMING, pastor of the M. E. church of which the deceased was a member. The death of Mrs. Amos SMITH leaves George NIPER as the oldest resident of Stanhope borough. He is in his ninety-third year. Amos CHAMBERLAIN, of whom we wrote last week, as being critically ill, died Monday evening, Dec. 5th, in the 59th year of his age. He was an energenic farmer, and for about nineteen years had occupied the Rockland Dairy farm, which he improved to great extent. He lost his wife and daughter nearly four years ago, and remarried aboutr a year since. He was a member and staunch supporter of the Stanhope Presbyterian church. His widow, a son, and three daughters survive him. The children are Silas and Mrs. Everitt APPLEGATE, of Netcong: Miss Retta, of Liberty, NY and Miss Kittle, at home.
