    3. Greetings from the Missouri Ozarks, I have Chancery Court papers for a case involving some of my Sussex Co. Slater kin. To make a long story short, two pieces of property in Newton were sold and divided among the heirs of my 3g-grandfather, Joseph Slater, Jr. The first piece was a lot containing .25 acres on Liberty Street (house, barn, outbuildings). The description (measured in chains and links) began at the corner of a lot "formerly Barnabas Carter's, now owned by Mrs. Rachel Ann Hedges, being also the south east corner of a lot formerly belonging to [now or lately to John Linn, Esq.]" The property being sold wasn't what belonged to Mrs. Hedges -- the corner of her lot was the starting place for measuring the Slater property. Anyway, the court papers also describe the Slater property as having been previously owned by Benjamin W. Decker. It was purchased by Julia Stoddard for $1900. The second lot (.38 acres) was on Madison Street "from Mrs. Gray's through to Spring Street." It was purchased by Andrew Newett for $278 (it had a small house, prob. a rental). A one-fourth interest in these two pieces of property had already been sold to one John Durling. I just thought I would post this in case anyone recognized these names as being in their family history. Oh, BTW, the case was decided in 1886. Best Wishes, Joe Slater Thayer, MO --------------------------------- Never miss an email again! Yahoo! Toolbar alerts you the instant new Mail arrives. Check it out.
