I have seen some early records where Rutan was spelled Rethan. Abraham Rutan(1658-1713) a Huguenot came to America in 1675, settled in New Paltz NY and in 1699, with wife Marie Petilon and family , moved on to New Barbadoes, Bergen (Essex) Co. NJ. Rutan is also spelled Retan, Ruttan, Ruton, Rheutan and Reton. Jim Keegan ************************************** AOL now offers free email to everyone. Thank you very much. I have Sussana Rethan m. Guliam Demarest with their daughter Catherine b. 26 May 1756 in NJ. Perhaps Sussana was a great granddaughter of Abraham and Marie Petilon. Sussana m. Jacobus ("James") Jacobus ca. 1778-9; most of the Jacobus family resided Pompton Plains, Bergen Co. I will enter this in my records. S.
