I see in Sussex County that there is a gap in the records between the formation of the county from Morris in 1753 and the beginning of generally available deed records in 1785 (LDS holdings). Are they held by the state archives or are there lost records or am I simply misreading the situation? I'm no expert, but the state archives does have earlier land records. There are at least two earlier types of land records. If other listers do not answer all of your questions, you may be able to learn more by browsing the archives' online catalog and by calling them. The staff there are extremely helpful.
