I am looking for information on John & Mary Shauger, who appear in the 1860 census in Sparta with children William H. age 8, Ellen J. age 5, and Amelia age 2. Parents and children were all born in New Jersey. I am particularly trying to find their connection to Jacob Rorick and his wife, Elizabeth Wilson. In reviewing some microfilmed info an unrelated Rorick family that I got through my local Family History Center, I found that that researcher had corresponded with a descendant of Jacob and Elizabeth (a distant cousin of mine) in the early 1960s. She gave him a typed list of Jacob and Elizabeth's children which included a handwritten note that one daughter (no first name) married a Shauger (no first name). Many of Jacob and Elizabeth's children emigrated to Lenawee County, MI. In the 1870 census, I find Ellen and Amelia Shauger living with members of the extended Rorick family there, with birthdates that correspond to the two children from the 1860 census and their birthplace given as New Jersey. There are also two additional, younger Shauger children, Lucy and Susan, living in Lenawee County in 1870. I have not located the son, William H. I know that the Lenawee County Roricks took in the children of two of their brothers who died relatively young (along with their wives) back in Sussex County, so I am inclined to believe that these four Shauger girls are, in fact, relatives, and that that handwritten note has an element of truth in it. But, I have been unable to connect their parents to Jacob and Elizabeth. Jacob's will does mention a granddaughter named Mary, and there is a Mary Rorick living with Jacob and Elizabeth in the 1850 census who seems too young to be their daughter. It would make sense that, if she lived with them, she would be the only grandchild singled out in his will. But, I have been unable to connect her to any of Jacob and Elizabeth's children that I am aware of. So, I thought I would throw this one out to the list. Can anyone else shed any light on this family? Thanks in advance. Carol Ann Hilton http://www.geocities.com/carolann_hilton/Rorick.html
