    2. The following is an excerpt from Scannell's New Jersey's First Citizens and State Guide, 1925, Volume 5. ----------------- SAMUEL S. VANDRUFF--Sussex--Railroading. Born at the Old Homestead, which he now owns and operates, at Wantage Township, near Sussex, Oct. 14, 1848; son of Samuel and Margaret (Benjamin) Vandruff; married to Anna M. Bronson, daughter of Oscar and Susan M. (Overheiser) Bronson. Children: (1) Susan, deceased. (2) Anna, died in infancy. (3) Frederick B. He married Effie Lawrence, daughter of Mayor Seymour Lawrence, of Sussex, N.J. They have two children, Eleanor and Anna. --------------------- Jacob Vandruff, paternal grandfather of Samuel S. Vandruff, was a farmer of Vernon Township. He married Margaret Benjamin, of Sussex. They were the parents of (1) Frank, who died in infancy. (2) Margaret, deceased. (3) Eve, deceased. (4) Nettie, deceased. (5) Elizabeth, married H.L. Emmons. (6) Samuel. (7) Della, married J.L. Quick. (8) George, married Stella Shorter. Samuel, son of Samuel and Margaret, a farmer, was the father of Samuel S. Vandruff. Mrs. Vandruff, daughter of Oscar Bronson and Susan M. (Overheiser) Bronson, is a cousin of Rear Admiral Bronson, of Rhode Island. -------------------------------------- Samuel S. Vandruff was educated at Sussex and Mendham, N.J. After finishing school, he helped his father who was engaged in farming. At the death of his father, Mr. Vandruff continued the cultivation of the lands until his interests were drawn elsewhere. He became associated with John Loomis, serving as assistant post master and clerk. Finding clerkship to his liking he was engaged as such for a period of twenty-one years, when he formed a merchandise company under the name of Couse and Vandruff. Some time later, Mr. Vandruff received an offer which he accepted with the Pennsylvania, Poughkeepsie and Boston Railroad Company, and is still connected with its successor, the Lehigh and New England, where he has been for forty-one years. He was at one time superintendent of the New Jersey division. He was appointed a State Board of Health officer, which position he held for twenty-six years. At one time he served as freeholder of Sussex County, and Mayor of the Borough of Sussex for nine years. He was trustee of schools for number of years and is now president of the Board of Education. Mr. Vandruff built a railroad for the State of Massachusetts, known as the Vandruff, Primrose & Simmons. He also constucted a reservoir at Haverille, Massachusetts. Mr Vandruff is a director of the Farmers' National Bank of Sussex, and is an associate life member of the New Jersey Genealogical and Biographical Society. His business address is Sussex, N.J.
