    1. [NJSUSSEX-L] Re: SNOOK/SIMMONS/GUNDERMAN/COSS/BALE connections
    2. Butch & Sher
    3. Nancy, I have received references to the ADAM and MARY SNOOK listed below. I believe this may be the ADAM I am looking for. My Rev. War ancestor, Capt. CONRAD GONTTERMAN from Sussex Co. gave permission for a MARY CONTERMAN to marry ADAM SNOOK in 1768 in Sussex Co.. I have a feeling this could have been his sister. If so, this could have been a later in life marriage, which the grown children of ADAM could indicate. As far as the SIMMONS connections....there are many. The more I discover, the more "tangled" the web becomes! CONRAD's wife was MAREY SIMMONS, daughter of JOHN SIMEONS/SIMMONS (born Germany) and MARY WHITTAKER. MAREY was also the sister of your JOHN who married ELIZABETH (some say ELIZABETH's maiden name was TITMAN, but that is disputable). MAREY also had brothers PHILLIP who married ANN, and PETER who married LAVINA. There is an ANN SIMMONS in the old Stillwater Cemetery who died 4/1/1838, aged 94 years. MAREY died before 1807 and left children, MARY, who married ISAAC STICKLES, WILLIAM, who married a cousin, MARY SIMMONS (sister to JOHN SIMMONS III who married 1. ___________UPTEGROVE) JOHN, who married ABIGAIL NORTHRUP, (d/o BEN & LENORA WHITEHEAD NORTHRUP) HENRY, who married BARBARA GONTERMAN, d/o HENRY and CATHARINE COSS GONTERMAN. (This latter HENRY was a brother? to CONRAD MARGARET, who married WILLIAM VAN NO(L)TE PETER, who married MARY/POLLY CHRISTY (d/o JOHN and ELIZ. LARUE CHRISTY). WILLIAM is my ancestor. As mentioned above, his first wife was MARY SIMMONS, sister of the JOHN III you mention in your e-mail. MARY died as did her brother JOHN. But before JOHN died, he married after ____UPTEGROVE, 2. MARY KISHPAUGH. When JOHN died, MARY KISHPAUGH SIMMONS married WILLIAM GONTERMAN/GUNTERMAN, above, and they had children MARTHA, SAMUEL and JOHN SIMMONS GUNTERMAN. WILLIAM's wife MARY also had the following brothers and sisters besides JOHN III (1777-1824): PHILLIP, (1782-1868) married 1. LAVINA __, 2. 1813, SUSAN STRUBLE SARAH (1783-1858) married 4/12/1802 DAVID HOPKINS PETER, (1784-1805) married MARGARET LYDIA married 1796 JOHN B. KNOFF SUSAN (1792-1871) married CONRAD STRUBLE ELIZABETH, married PETER SNOOK BARBARA, married 1799, SAMUEL PRICE (he died in 1802) CATHERINE, married 1812 IRA BURRELL The original JOHN SIMEONs may have had brothers PHILLIP, PETER, and SAMUEL, for in 1766 (Deed Book, Vol. C, pg. 387 staes that the above persons (including JOHN) purchased 301 plus acres from JACOB DODDER in Sussex Co., NJ. Another reference states that these SIMMONS' settled near Marksboro, now in Warren Co., NJ. Later, around 1772, SAMUEL, JOHN and PETER SIMMONS bought land in LaFayette, Sussex Co., NJ, situated between Hopkins Corners and Monroe Corners. >From "LaFayette Township, New Jersey" by Everitt and McCann, pg. 2: "HENRY BAIL/BALE (who married CONRAD GONTTERMAN's sister, ELIZABETH) came here in 1750"....."BAIL was a German, as were most of the families who settled in the LaFayette area at the same time. Their names were SIMMONS, SNOOK, SNYDER, STRUBLE, STRADER, SPACE, COUSE, CALTS, MAINES, LANTZ, and others. Many of these people were related or had been neighbors back in Germany." I have more SNOOK information, such as: CASPER SNOOK was born about 1740, died Dec. 1817. His wife was ELIZABETH_________. It is believed that CASPER settled in Sussex Co., NJ about 1760. He purchased land in what is now LaFayette, 12/30/1800. He left a Will. (#A-452, Hall of Records, Sussex Co., NJ) Children were: MATTHIS, b. 1770 (married 1. ANN DIVERS, 2. Up to present day, we have JOHN SIMMONS/SIMEON GUNDERMANs in our line and they have no clue where their names originally came from!
