I also have several members of the same family (siblings and spouses) who moved to the area (Steuben Co, NY) from Sussex Co. I've done a little research as to why, and have found that there were a couple of, for lack of a better term, land speculation companies in the western NY area that apparently advertised the availability of cheap land throughout the northeast. The two I've found are the Phelps/Gorham Purchase or Pulteney Estate and the Holland Land Co. The latter seems to have covered the Ontario Co. area. I do know that there are some 19th C. histories of the setttlement of these areas. There are also records of purchases available, but I haven't looked into these yet. I'm certainly not an expert, and someone else may have more information about this. Kevin >I have a question for the list. I have found 3 brothers of my Frazer line that moved to Ontario Co. There are several choices .. a map history, written, etc. My Hammond family and other families from Stillwater moved into Genesee and Wyoming counties ( at the time they still one county) . Early land records have been transcribed and are in the archives.
