Evening List: My genealogy search appears to bring me now to Sussex County, NJ during the mid to late 1700's. I have ancestors who, it appears, relocated from Sussex County to Luzerne County, Pa in the 1790's. One ancestor is reputed to have been employed there as "a charcoal burner", the other a physician. Now, I live in quite a rural area and have very little access to anything outside of local history so I really could use a bit of history and knowledge now. Would any one have any information on what was the pull for many from Sussex County to go to Pennsylvania??? It was prior to the coal age. What it due to some sort of circumstances in Sussex that they wanted to leave, or was there a reason/pull to go to PA and other locations??? Or simply many cases of wanderlust and wanting to "expand the horizons"??? Please email me with your information and opinions. In advance, thanks so much for the insight.... I think the big reason to move West was cheap open land. Most of these people were having big families, 10 or more kids. The oldest son would get the parent's farm, the rest would move on. One thing that surprises me about many of my ancestors, is how all the kids would split up and go different places. One would think they would try to buy land near each other. My WALTER family also migrated from Sussex Co. NJ first to Northampton Co. PA, then to Newton Twp., Luzern Co. PA. Henry apparently left NJ for PA about 1825 with his family. The curious part is that I can find no trace of him in NJ.
